We pulled the net this afternoon and managed a super long whitefish. I figure he went 24-25 inches and weighed in between 5 & 7 lbs. Not very fat, but we don't often get them that long.

The last pic is compared with our average size fish. Actually he has a giant head on him too, now that I look at the pic again.

Here's a picture of a cony, notice the bottom jaw protrudes past the top jaw. I thought it was a cony too when it came through the ice but the proof is in the overhanging top lip. Definitely a whitefish.

Sure does look like a cony though.

It would be interesting to age that whitefish

No kidding, too bad the fillets are already in the freezer waiting for a new home. I didn't realize the size of the head until I posted it.

A few years ago a commercial fisherman in Hay River caught a 32 lb whitefish in his net. It's the all time all tackle world record.

I thought the same thing but it died with its mouth open. I closed it with my fingers to see what it looked like and it looked like a normal whitefish head, although oversized to say the least.

Like BeeGuy said it could be really old, or maybe even a subspecies. I would tend to think old though. I've caught some pike and trout that had giantheaditis also.

I didn't realize you could get an "all tackle" world record using a net ......

32lbs is massive - that was likely was an incconu - not a lake white I bet (the record fish I mean).

I guess the ability for a commercial fisherman to recognize the fish he has been catching for years must stop at the 60th parallel. Fortunately the DFO was on hand to give it an official identification.

By "all tackle" I include dynamite and f-18 fighter jets.

The pic is on page B11
