Just had a customer show me a picture of a walleye caught at Tobin Lake, Sask. and they are waiting for confirmation of the weight of 22 pounds. Will keep everyone posted as to the results, and will try to get picture on here. Stay tuned.

This year or last ? There was a claimed 22 caught on Cumberland lake just down stream from Tobin last year that was about 10lbs shy.

The Gentleman who showed me the picture, said it was caught a couple of days ago. I am waiting for the picture to come so I can try and upload it. I know Tobin has some huge fish in it, 18.3 lps a couple of years ago set the record. It could be broken.

Why do you say that? Not a big fan of holding fish out, but there is some serious girth there. It's also well over 30", so if that's what they claim, I don't see anything that screams, no way.

Experience.

I've seen a lot of fish that size (I'm guessing around 32" or so based on the size of his hands/gloves) come out of the water, I've never seen one over 15lbs.

The difference between a fish that's 5lbs and one that's 10lbs, is massive. The difference between a 10lb fish and one that's 14-15lbs is equally as staggering.

That's a beauty walleye, it likely is 15lbs or so, especially at this time of year when they're full of roe, but it isn't 22.

Walleyedude
03-25-2013, 02:49 PM

Well I'm not calling my customer a lier, it was his nephew and friend that were fishing. It is comparable to the one caught a few years ago by the Priest in Carrot River. I know not everyone's scale is the same, but I think you can give the guy a benifit of the doubt. It is up there for sure.

I guess I am this time. I'm just calling it as I see it. People tend to overestimate the size/weight of fish, it's not necessarily intentional lying, it's just kinda human nature. I do it all the time until the cold hard truth of scale comes out.

I don't usually say anything on threads like this because there's really no point to it, just let people believe whatever they want to and be happy catching real nice fish. I like seeing pictures of big fish and it doesn't affect me at all, but rumors of 22lb fish being caught in SK lakes doesn't make me happy.

Ever go anywhere near Biggar SK after Milo Hanson shot his buck?

Selfish I guess.

I wouldn't hold your breath on this one getting registered.

FYI, to anyone suggesting it's 37-38", the current catch and release world record caught by Tim Geni was measured at 33-3/4" length with a 19-3/8" girth. I believe the overall SK record is the "priest" fish from Tobin at 36.5" and 18.3lbs.

A typical 36" Pike is 10lbs-12lbs - but Walleye are way heavier for sure.

That's a big Walleye - my guess is at least 16 lb - 17 lb but it's hard to tell without an accurate length / girth.

Big pig either way ......

May I just say, baptiste, that I REALLY appreciate pics like you posted.

Thank you. :)

My rule when looking at a fish pic - if you can't see the person's elbows under the fish, that fish is looking much bigger than it really is.

Its a shame really, a big fish is a big fish, and the OP posted a pic of a hog walleye, but the way the guy is holding it out ( not to mention the beer in his collar ) really make it look way too fake. Honestly, it ruins an awesome big fish pic for me.

I don't know or even guess that the beast in question is 22 LB, or 15 LB. What I do know, from fishing there on numerous occasions in the past, is that the same length fish from Tobin is generally much heavier than the Alberta equivalent. Simple equation of "producivity" (?) My youngest son caught a 38" Pike that was close to 18 lb. Just much bigger around than the same fish here. Same Pike in typical Alberta waters - maybe 12-14 if it was really fat (?). The fish in that reservoir are very well fed and maybe, genetically, disposed to higher weights at lesser length (?).
I wouldn't be at all surprised by a 20 lb. walleye coming out of there. One afternoon about 15 years ago, we sat on a big school of large walleye for just a couple of hours. We already had lots of fish to eat, so the rule was that we would only keep the biggest one. I have a picture (not digital unfortunately) of my ex b-in-l letting an 8.5 go so that my 9.5 could occupy the livewell. Of the 20 or so walleye we caught that afternoon, only 2 were under 5 pounds. And it was a "tournament" of a minor kind, and my big fish only finished third in that category! I didn't win anything!! There were 2 bigger walleye caught by non-pros! Not only that, my 14 lb. pike also finished 3rd - no prize!
And I have been down there on the flats, at the south east end just on the old road, 2' of water under the boat, casting into the former ditch, in the spring, just after "ice out". Pike after Pike, on almost anything that was shiny and moved, and 8-14 lb. - never saw a really huge one, but what a blast to just have one of those beasts whack your lure on every cast(?). All released, by the way.
Tobin is an incredible fishery. Hope the SK regulators continue to manage it as mostly C & R, for the big ones, especially those old girl Pike.

So I should be banned for questioning the claim that a potential world record fish was caught and posted? C'mon BBJ.

Its a great fish, a fish of a lifetime that I would love to have my picture holding before I let it go. I'm not trying to take that away from anyone, just questioning the weight claim, and I think fairly so. If not for the 22lb claim, I wouldn't have said anything beyond complimenting the fish.

Try posting a pic of your world record whitetail in the hunting section with only a questionable pic and a second hand story. It would get ugly!

don't think that length of fish and what it weighs can ever be consistent. last year i caught a lot of wallies (and saw caught) that were in the 36" range but some were chunky, some were normal and some were downright skinny. the nicer ones were in the 8-10 lbs. range. don't think they put on the same weight in the river as in a lake.

For many, I think, it is not a case of whether your estimate was right or wrong, it is the fact that every time someone posts a pic with length or weight, someone has to come on berate the poster about the size.

It's fishing. I expect fish sizes to be exaggerated. That's part of the fun of the fish story itself.

Who cares if it was 10lb or 20lb?

Bigger pickerel than I've caught in western Canada, and that's not likely to change.

I didn't berate anyone. In fact, I was courteous and respectful in questioning the claim of a world record walleye being caught and in the posts that followed discussing it.

I care. It's not every day a world record walleye is caught. I'm not going to argue weights on the average fish, but when a claim like that is made, it's a big deal, or it is to me anyway.

I've got a 13 and it looks like a dink compared to that fish. Couple ounces under 13.

Thanks for the pic but let's keep it realistic

Ok I dug this picture up that was a friend's nephew that caught this hog in Tobin in Feb 2013 and it weighed in at 15-3/4 lbs. I will dig up my 10 and 11 lber walleye pictures for tomorrow and post. I would say that one posted has to be close to 20 lbs IMHO. PS keep in mind that he is a big fellow so yeah thats a big walleye!

I guess that's a cut at me? LOL I'd say your not much at guessing weight, it was weighed on a certified scale and I got a little trophy for it too. Plus my name on a big trophy, woot, woot. That was many moons ago, spent a lot of time on the river to get a 10lb fish to mount, got another at just under 12lbs the same day. It's hanging on the ranchers wall.
