Here’s a trick I used last night, I decided to leave my portable out on Sylvan overnight, I rarely do this as it’s so easy for it to disappear! When I packed up my gear, I took 2-3 shovels full of snow and piled it up over the two 10” holes which acts as insulation. This morning the temp was –14C, I was sure I would need to use my Ice Chisel, to break through 2” or more of ice. To my surprise, the holes weren't frozen over whatsoever, I use the chisel to cut up some of the frozen snow, & scoped the holes out, they look about the same as yesterday. Thought I'd share, give it a try!

I just usually pour 1/2 a gallon or so of anifrreze in the holes. If you pour it real slow it stays in the hole no problem. I used to use the rv stuff cuase it is supposed to be enviro friendly but it does not work nearly as well as the glycol based stuff.

Kidding, kidding

Used motor oil floats on top of the hole so it works way better. plus then you dont have to grease your pan to cook the fish, cheaper too!

None at all, just crusty snow on top & all slush for about 5-6" down, used my orange plastic ice scoop & filled a 5 gal pail about 3/4 full. In the past when I didn't cover them with snow it was at least 2-3" thick, I had to use the axe or the ice chisel. As well, note the hole diameter it didn't get any smaller.

Seen a show where native net fishermen did the same thing - pretty cool actually.

i'm going to experiment with a toilet seat and lid to see if it would work to keep snow out and prevent freezing.

perhaps all the snow shovelling iv'e done lately has affected my brain.
