With Newell Lake, it's a PP1 lake, and according to this site it says it's open March 16 -to- May 7 - http://www.albertafishingguide.com/location/water/all/newell-lake

Mar. 16 to May 7 – CLOSED according to http://albertaregulations.ca/fishingregs/pp1.html

But, according to some info here:
http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?t=125562

It might still be open until the end of the month? I tried calling the Calgary Fish and Wildlife to get clarification, but they're closed for lunch right now.

Looking to get out and do some ice fishing this weekend (Saturday), leaving from Calgary. Need to catch my first pike!

Thanks!

Closed according to the reg's.

Where is the confusion?

According to another post on the forums:

Please correct me if I'm wrong but any changes made for 2012/2013 don't take effect until April 1st.

If the rules were different last season, and this is true that the rules aren't updated until April 1st, it might still be open?

Okay, well, thanks for the friendly introduction to the forum. I do plan on calling FAW to make sure. I'm not arguing the dates contained within the regulations, just if they're applicable yet.

The 2013-2014 regs are not yet in effect because it is not yet April 1st.

You don't need a new license yet either.

Just read the 2012-2013 reg's, follow them, and have a 2012-2013 license.

Dont fish Newell until May 8th, and when you do, follow the 2013-2014 reg's and have a 2013-2014 license.

Threads on this site should not inform you on what the rules and regulations are, and neither should private entity websites.

If you look on albertafishingguide, I am sure you will see that they say to consult the reg's.

Which region do you live in?

Are you a new fisherperson?

We could probably find a pike spot near where you are.

Thanks, I do understand there are probably lots of questions that are easily answered in the regulation rules posted here, I apologize if it seemed like I hadn't consulted them first. I am new to this stuff (for example, I purchased my fishing license on March 13th..).

I was a little confused by whats on the main page: http://www.albertaregulations.ca/fishingregs/

"Regulations are effective from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014"

So when I checked http://albertaregulations.ca/fishingregs/pp1.html - and saw the date closed Mar. 16 to May 7, I was a little confused. If the regulations are affect April 1st, stating the lake is off limits Mar. 16 to May 7 2014, what about 2013?

Since http://www.albertafishingguide.com/location/water/all/newell-lake has conflicting dates, it's probably showing last year's info; which would have left the lake open now?

I'm still confused haha. I always assumed fishing was always available everywhere in Alberta, you just need to have a license for it. No sir!

Haven't caught a fish in over 15 years. Need to. Dying to.

We could probably find a pike spot near where you are.

In Calgary. We have a car, so not all places might be accessible. We primarily want to fish pike, but we've gone out twice recently and have come back with nothing. Sibbald Lake (we think the fish were all killed off by winter) + Spray Lakes (too cold and windy).

If pike aren't available, we would be happy with anything. We've got a nice power auger too.

Thanks!

If you are not familiar with the reg's you will need to spend some time familiarizing yourself with them.

There are province wide rules,
region wide rules,
and water body specific rules.

Many of the rivers are divided into sections with each section having a unique set of rules as well. Some of the lakes have fish sanctuaries (=no fishing).

Alberta is not the best place to fish if you want to bring a cooler full home, however once you get to know some spots and dial in your technique you will have some success.

Spray is not a bad place to get some table fare although you need a shelter if the weather isnt great.

You might be able to get some pike in the reservoirs around Red Deer, but check the reg's.

2012-2013 reg's are still in effect.
