I've had this old wooden fishing reel for some time ,I'm sure they are not uncommon, were they used on fishing vessels? It couldnt have been used for regular fishing,if so I'd be keeping my distance from this guy if he was ****ed.

Probably a deck winch but could be a sidecast reel.

We still use a similar style of reel for surf and boat fishing in Queensland, Australia.

The reel looks like a Peetz wooden body salt water trolling/mooching reel.
It is not 'ancient'. Maybe manufactured around the end of the war at 'Peetz Vancouver'. Do a google search for more info or try 'used vancouver.com....:test::test:
There were a number of sizes [diameter] available' from 3" up to 6".
The reel in the photo has a counter which guides the user to a desired depth..
They were a common sight back in the 50s & 60s and some may still be in use. They never wear out.....

To become a member of TYEE club you need to catch a salmon over 30 pounds using this PEETZ reel no downrigger and rowboat. The original mooching style !!!

I believe it's a Peetz.
It has the counter on it
It was manufactured prior to 1978.

You interested in selling it?
