get up power to plain

bought a 2007 lund 1625 classic ss with a 30 hp merc 4 stroke efi off a guy and im hoping there is enough get up to plain there is a 9.50x11p prop i have been reading up on it and so far it doesnt sound promising can anybody help me on prop selection

I have a 16.5 foot alumacraft with a 40hp 4 stroke merc. and had tons of trouble even with a hydrofoil on the motor to get on plane.

I had to add a manual jackplate to the boat and dial it in. With the jackplate and hydrofoil I pop up pretty quick on plane now and can reach about 28mph with my boat.

I have my boat rigged pretty heavy with a ton of gear so that plays into it quite a bit also.

Fishing alone with minimum gear you shouldn't really have a problem but if start adding a ton of gear and a few people it will be very tough to get on plane.

I should also mention that my boat has a 24 volt bow mount motor, 24 volt transom mount motor, a ton of tackle, a dozen rod combos, all the safety gear, 3 batteries, and a 20lbs anchor with 8 feet of rubber coated chain and 100' of rope.

I am hoping to sell my motor to upgrade to a 75-90hp tiller motor after this season.

Start with mimimum safety gear go for a run see how boat planes. I had a lund tinner with a 30hp it planed fine with three and gear. Np is pushin a ton of heavy gear batts an trolling motors .the motor should have trim position on the mounting plate. These will help get you sorted out.

Moose I had the same problem last year on my SSV with a 40 Merc. I was running a 14p 3 blade prop that comes standard. I dropped down to a 13P 4 blade Spitfire prop and made all the difference in the world. Top speed went down 1 to 1.5 mph.

My advice also. Mercury designed the SpitFire for exactly the problem as described. If $150.00 is worth a quicker hole shot, then go for it. Besides, nothing wrong with having a spare.

The spit fire prop does an amazing job improving hole shot without loosing much if any top end.

Moving a 16 foot boat with gear and guys with a 30 hp and no matter what you do you are underpowered. Fine if its an empty tin can with you and 5 gallons of gas, a case of beer with a wafe thin girlfriend but how often will that happen? :scared0018:Get more power and ease off once you get up. You are SAFER with more power. Anybody who says otherwise needs to learn how to drive.:argue2:

Helps some if you put your fuel tank in the front. A buddy has a 14 ft with a 25hp and its pretty good for getting on plain with gear and two people. Would not go smaller than 25 hp tho. A 40hp would be great in your's but think the 30 should be ok with the right prop.

I agree with the fuel tank, get a long fuel line and put in the front (as long as you are not driving in flowing or rough waters ( access to the fuel pump bulb and the fuel line attachements that can become detached is VERY important for obvious reasons)
Also if you have problems getting up with one person in the boat the 10 gallon tanks sometimes add just enough extra weight (when boat nearly empty) to get the nose down and boat planing faster.
Another thing that may help you get on step (not if you are already overloaded) is the extended tiller arms I have seen for sale. Move the drivers weight to the centre of the boat. Another safety concern with that is I do not believe you extend the motor kill switch up the tiller arm. I guess if you have one of those kill cords you can hold on to it????
I have not tried the extended tillers, Any opinions out there?

well i did alot of checking around and with some advice on the thread im going to try a 9.5 pitch spitfire 4 blade now just have to wait for the dang ice to get off , the way its going could be middle of may .
