Go north about 30 minuets to Lockport and fish for the big Channel Cat's. Use raw jumbo prawns on a single #2 wide gap Gamakatsu. 3-4 oz weights depending on current flow. You will need a good stiff heavy action rod with 20-30 lb mono. You can also slip bob them after dark. Great fun!!!!!!

The current in the River is going to be to strong this time of year... River level will be very high due to the spring run off... And the lakes are still covered with ice...

If your going later this year, Lockport is to place to go, lots of drum/goldeye and BIG channel cats. You can get pre-rigged cat fish rigs at any fishin hole, or stop in Selkirk @ candian tire. Full bodied jumbo prawns and a good med/heavy rod, a must do if you've never caught a cat!

MY Family just got home from Winnipeg after being there a week as my Uncle passed away , but they said the Red River was really flooded , there were roads and highways from Saskatchewan East that were flooded and it sounded bad . I went there a few years back on the mission for cats , and after 3 days of my own venturing said screw it hired a guide and landed some fat cats .

I know on my own I used a Cabelas king kat rod which was sensitive enough to feel bites of rock bass , all the way to them big cat fish . paired up with a Shamano Cavallas reel . Did the job . ALso take your spinning rod , and put a worm under a bobber and catch a couple goldeye and use as cut bait on a 4/0 circle hook and let it soak until bubba kat comes along and eats it up then simply tighten you line and its rock on like donkey kong .

I love that place Im tempted in hauling the boat there in August depending on what my fishing trip schedule is like .

If you want a good guide get in touch with City Cats, Todd is the best is the biz when it comes to channel cats! I do know the bite slows down during the hot aummer months... I'll be making a trip back 2nd week of June and am taking a few Alberta buddies out that have never fished for cats before. Can't wait!

I lived in the peg for many years. if the river isn't too high, I say hit the river right where the red and Assiniboine meet in the city. amazing fishing!! heavy mono line, heavy rod, pickerel rigs with big hooks and worms. back then worms were legal. I wish I still had the pics of the wheel barrel full of cats!!

you guys know the Lockport secret. some days tough to find a spot though. I can remember fishing within 1 foot of other anglers. we were lined up downstream of the locks!! it never disappointed.
