I made my way up to the cottage for the long weekend but the weather was pretty crappy for the most part. I didn't get out for Walleye at all due to the wind for the first couple days but yesterday wasn't as bad so we went after Lakers for a few hours and had some good action. This one suffered some fairly serious gill trauma but she will make a couple good meals.

Great fish Chet. In lieu of the recent airfare price hikes, a couple of my friends decided to postpone our west coast fishing trip. Im thinking that hireing a charter on Cold Lake could be a good alternative to the Salmon trip. How has the fishing been recently? Does it pick up in the fall?......Anyone done a charter on the lake before?.........dont mean to hijack, just thrown it out there.

Nice Laker Chet.
I haven't been able to catch anything bigger that 8-9 lbs out of there this year, good eating size not much for fighting though. I was over at Pierce Lake last week and they were even smaller there.
Have you tried going up the Martineau river for walleye? it's kind of shallow by the mouth of it but once your in it gets better. It is a little ways away but if you launch on that side of the lake it's not to bad.

Thanks dudes,

How deep were you and how deep was the hook in the lake ?

We had action from 30 to 80 feet. Bottom depth varied greatly.

Drake,

That lake has been fishing pretty well all summer I believe. I have been out three times and it has always been decent. I think it would be a good alternative to Salmon fishing. Pound for pound, I don't think they fight quite as hard but the big ones still pull pretty good. It is very similar to Salmon fishing, especially in the summer when they are deep and you are running your gear off the downriggers.

Have you tried going up the Martineau river for walleye?

I have not tried that yet Rigg Dogg. One of these days I will. Our Cottage is actually at Moose Lake so I do most of my Walleye fishing there and then day trips over to Cold Lake for Lakers.

drake, I met CapnRon of CapnRon's Charters at the marina, seemed like a very nice fellow and he was super helpful getting the wife and I set up with tips on our first trip there.
He showed us what was working and what parts of the lake to try or to avoid.

Hey Drake
You might want to go before Sept 15. I'm pretty sure it's closed for Lakers after that, till Nov.
Maybe check the reg's though.

For those fish you need to go to beautiful Manitoba, buddies go ther 2x a year in the spring and again at the end of Aug and as the stories go you get sick of pulling 40 plus lbs lakers. They have always got at least a couple 50 lbs fish on every trip.
