ended up loosing some gear last weekend... looking for a good all purpose setup 7ft 2 piece rod and spinning reel, going to be used for pike and walleye fishing at the lakes and whatever turns up in our rivers up north here.
would like to keep it under 600$ for the combo but not really on a set budget
any suggestions would be appreciated.

for a spinning reel i would recommend Pflueger® Supreme® XT Spinning Reels
best reel i have had.
it casts super far, and reels in smooth. the drag works very well.

With that very nice budget that will put on the best gear ........ here's my recommendation .......

Loomis Legend Elite 7' M/L fast action spinning rod $ 329

with a

Abu Garcia Revo Premier spinning reel - $250

This would be the ULTIMATE walleye/pike combo for almost all fishing applications.

I'd run a 20lb power pro line onto a fluorocarbon leader and you are set to do battle like a pro.

If you're catching pike in access of 20lbs go with a 7'6" and stay away from the M/L if you are casting heavy lures. Personally I went with a PT Tour 7'6" M and have no problem chucking the largest len thompsons or rapalas. Good advice on the line.

What size of lures do you like to (or will) use?
Most rods are rated for lure weight as well as line weight. Take EZM's example, a great rod by the way (I think he meant St. Croix and not G Loomis), The recommended lure weight for that rod is 1/8-3/8 oz. which are fairly light lures good for walleye jigs and small spinners. But on the other hand if you throw mid sizes Len Thompsons primarily, which are 1/2-1 oz, perhaps a Medium heavy (3/8 - 3/4 oz) rod would be better.

For reel I like the Shimano Stratic FJ

probably going to be throwing medium sized lures, nothing to big as I already have a rod for the big rapalas and len thompsons, also planning on using 20lbs braided not sure what kind yet
