Well the father in law and I headed to the Red Deer River Tirbutaries area again this year for a few days. Awesome time! Caught 3 different species of trout. Lots of small browns in challenging casting spots on the streams. Caught a few rainbows to cook up as well out of Mitchell Lake (Pond). This was my first time to the North Ram and my first Cutthroat trout ever. Nice looking fish but not as challenging as catching those brown trout. Had a great time camping and siping scotch by the fire. Tried out a new deer heart recipe as well (see pics below).

My first hooked (and soon landed) Cutthrout trout:

The North Ram River ... probably looks different in the spring:

The biggest of the day (15"):

We fished Prairie Creek until dark that night as well. A few nice browns (speculation) spit the fly right after hitting it, but I managed to land several small ones right near dark.

Another day was full of brown trout action. They were about 7 different trout in the picture below working this part of the stream on the May fly hatch. I think we spent about a good hour not moving more than 20 yards.

Success once we matched the right color May fly:

Managed to get land this nice 20"er just upstream from the bend above.

Ahh, back to camp to cook 2 deer hearts stuffed with butter, garlic, ginger, peppers, onion and chives wrapped in 7 layers of heavy duty tinfoil and placed in the coals for 45 minutes, delicious (bring a spade shovel for turning)

Another day and hunting brown trout, it is very hard to get tired of it:

Nice job there BRL. I'm camping out there this weekend and fishing both of those waters. Those mayflies you were seeing were white, they're actually called PMD's. (Pale Morning Dun's). Type of mayfly.

It was great. Very moist, not dry at all and they had been in the freezer quite some time (2 yrs for one of them).

No they actually were a shade of navy blue. They would not hit white colored flies, the browns were being quite picky that day and just feeding on the hatch color.
