What are the reg's this year? I heard something about about 2 fish one has to be under 83cm and the other under 125?

I caught a 110 lb a couple years back. Fun to catch and fight but just too much to deal with. I think everything over 35 is going back now. A couple of those is lots.

Are you using barbed or barbless? It seems like it might be a chore to get a barbed treble out.

I've also heard about the 83 and 126cm law they are imposing, I thought it was on all coastal waters?

Copied verbatim from the Fisheries & Oceans Canada license:

Halibut: the maximum length is 126 cm. The daily limit is 1.The possession limit is 2, only one of which can be greater than 83 cm in length.

So here is the story the best I can tell it after a day on the water. If you remember anything BB welcome to add.

We had just landed a 55lber, threw both lines back down...waiting a couple minutes as the tide had just started to actually do something...small tides resulted in very little tide which is tougher to catch halibut in, but so many fish where we fish, it was no big deal. Boom, back right rod goes off screaming line, run back, wait to feel the hook in his mouth and slowly set, still peeling, knew it was a good fish, passed it off to Russell or Bear I believe. He is fighting this one and he's a tough guy so to see him struggle I knew it was good...at first thinking 60 then it peeled a ton of line off half way up and thinking bigger.

As that fish is half way up, the line beside it with a bigggg bait goes off and the rod is going up and down, knowing it's a big bait i wait but immediately I can tell it is already swallowed so I tighten down the drag...the fish peels line like there isn't even a drag...I say to the guys, this is a big fish, maybe even 200, over 100 for sure. Well we get the 110lber in and get some nice pics, then I go to pay attention to the other fish and see it has peeled out at least 150ft of line...oh man, this is gonna take a while. After passing the rod from person to person I take a turn and wow...I can hardly gain on this thing even with all my years experience running a rod...heavy heavy...needless to say after hr and 45min of passing the rod around we still have not really gained more than 20ft on the fish...I decide to take a chance as it will be the only way to get it in the boat without killing ourselves and I handline it in as the guys reel...I feel for when it wants to take line and just add a bit of extra drag with my hand. VERY LITTLE THOUGH...just enough so that we gain more than it takes. This worked well and within 15minutes I see a shadow bigger than anything I've ever seen....I'm thinking 250 at least..well after measuring her via a rope and using the tide, she came in at 78.5" or approximately 260lbs! Best fish I've ever caught...may not beat that for the rest of my life, and since I've been fishing out of Port Hardy the largest I've heard caught here...best thing is I know there are many more out there like that, Lane, our 3rd guide also caught a 220lber...and 3 over 130 in the same day...these spots rock guys.

Book for 2014 now as our July is almost full!!!! :O August will be next as our guests arrive and rebook! :)

That story pretty much sums it up but I better give the wife the cred she deserves. The first turn on the hook set on the big Hali went to Jo and she fought that big bastid like a champ until her arms gave out. I'll never forget Russ reefing on that rod for all he was worth and you hand-bombing line while I pulled with all I had on the rod while Jo reeled until we finally tired out that monster :sHa_shakeshout:

Jo definitely showed she can keep up with the boys :happy0180: As soon as I finished bringing in the 110lb and we released it, all I could think of is wow and the one on now is larger! Here is the photo of the 110lb.
Thanks David for a great trip:cheers:

Was just curious. sure would suck to go through all that effort to reel in a 100 pounder and have to put it back. especially when it could be the only one you catch. LOL
