broad head question

My wife decided after last season she wants to archery hunt. She is shooting at 42lbs, will mecanical broad heads work or is she shooting too light to use them.The guy at WSS says fixed blade only.

I'd suggest a cut on contact fixed blade, like Magnus's Stinger, Stinger Buzzcut, or Slick Trick's Vipertrick, or Razortrick, to mention a few.

I think rage has new mechanicals made for light poundage bows. Not a huge fan of mechanicals but I got my first deer with a rage 3 blade. Switched to fixed blade think I'm gonna stick with the muzzys now. As long as she puts the arrow in the right spot there should be a deer on the ground.

My wife shoots 40lbs and 25.5DL. 125gr Magnus Stingers with bleeders. Total arrow weight 493gr. Clean pass through on her bear this spring cutting off two ribs.
As said before, cut on contact 2 blade broadhead and don't be scared to add some weight.

I would agree with the bow tech at wss.
I don't even understand why someone would use mechanicals. Personally I think they get people with the " flys just like field point" advertising ...., if you cannot get fixed broadhead a to fly like field point that simply means your bow isnt tunned proper.

I am a fan of G5 and would suggest either the striker or montec broadhead.

Sometimes with the speed bows even if they are finely tuned its tough to get the fixed blades to go exactly where you want them.

X2. Not every fixed blade broadhead will shoot great especially in speeds over 320-345. For those who say mechanicals are junk try shooting something other than a rage. I've shot multiple elk, moose and a big Zama buffalo with grim reapers. Lots of pass throughs with big holes.

I shoot fixed blade Muzzy MX-3 and love them.

Keep it simple. At that draw weight a simple fixed broadhead will work just fine. Then just practice like crazy. Absolutely no reason to go mechanical. Personally I am still shooting with 125 gr fixed blade Thunderheads I've been using for 25 years. Lost count of the number of moose and deer that these heads have taken and never had a blade break.

:D it been my experiance that unless a mecanical head hits absolute broadside with a 40# many will not perform theway they were designed, so to eliminate that issue a fixed, cut on contact head as suggested may be more suitable with a bow at that poundage, we have many shooting 40-50 lb bows using 85 gr heads like the G5 strikers and others suggested that work well even on moose.

Any bow is not tuned unless broadhead flies into same spot as filed point... Kind of a contradiction... if broadhead not flying the system is not tuned period, never miond finely tuned....

Fixed blad broadheads only exaggerate tuning issues....

Of course this is as long as the broadhead and arrow are straight and insert to broadhead alignment is square...

Kind of like saying my car is tuned but it stalls on the starting line....

I hear what you are saying BUT...,

If you are able to tune a bow to shoot a fixed blade at 345fps all the power to you.

Speed exaggerates issues too.

I think we will set her up with 100 grain fixed blades for this year. Now for a second question. She is shooting 150 spine arrows are those the right ones. Had a guy at work trying to tell me needs to be 250.

Are you sure? Tell us more arrow and draw length. Actual spine deflection of 250 is still way to stiff for her.

42lb draw with a 100 grain broadhead and an estimated 26" arrow should have her shooting an arrow with a spine deflection between .480"and .520"

In that case she can shoot a higher deflection even.
What arrows do you have in 150's Ill guess a carbon express of sorts.

Carbon Express and other manufactures use different ways to measure arrow spine. I would suggest reading the manufacurers website and find you arrow to find the actual stiffness. In the case of a Carbon Express Maxima arrow a 150 is an actual spine deflection of .487 which is just fine for her.....no need to go stiffer!

thanks Mike W . I used to shoot archery like 25 years ago. way different today. Quite the learning curve, info from everyone at archery lane says one thing the big stores archery counters all give different info.
