With the water levels coming down and the rivers seemingly to be back to normal me and some buddies decided to head out of town and try "the magic spot". Last year being my first year of flyfishing, I missed out on quite a few opportunities and didn't have much action with the bulls. I was quite determined to change that.

Upon reaching the spot, the first few casts in yielded some bulls for my buddies, including this big beauty.

the smile in the first pic says it all!

The day progressed on and everyone was having pretty consistent action except for me. just as the frustration was really starting to mount, i hooked up and got to tangle with easily one of the biggest (if not biggest) fish Ive ever caught.

Once my buddies had netted her, I did what any self respecting and composed fisherman would do; jumped up and down and screamed to the heavens with joy. measuring at 27 inches and my guess somewhere around 7-8 lbs, to say i was ecstatic is an understatement.

Saying goodbye

we kept fishing and my stroke of bad luck was broken, I caught 3 more bulls afterwards, including this pretty one.

100 percent AB bulls :) and I grew up knowing them as bull trout. I know they're truly a char but didn't know some referred to them as char.

Of course you did this with all the tact of a 5 year old catching his first stocked pond rainbow as well I would suspect!!
I Think I would be doing a very big "happy dance" as well!!:sHa_sarcasticlol:
Great looking fish Andrew, congrats.....

technically bulls, browns, and brookies are all char, which spawn in the fall as opposed to true trout (cutties and bows) which spawn in the spring

in other news, Nice fish!! I'm jealous, only bulls I've caught were 12"

Ok, I've let this error go uncorrected for long enough. Sorry to chastise you Flieguy, but brown trout are not charrs. They are true trout like rainbows and cutthroats.

The important distinction is not when they spawn (it's true that browns spawn in the fall like bull trout and brook trout (both charrs)) but the presence or absence of black spots. All trout have black spots, while all charrs have no black spots. There are some other differences as well, but this is the key to identifying trout vs. charr.

http://www.albertaregulations.ca/fishingregs/helpful-info.html

Bull trout, dolly varden, brook trout, lake trout, and arctic charr are all charrs.

Brown trout, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, golden trout are all trout.

Char vs. charr is a matter of preference. I prefer the older spelling, but both are correct.

To the OP. Nice bulls!
