NSR - In Edmonton for two days

Hi,

I am up in NW edmonton for work for a few days. I have nothing to do at the end of the day and was thinking the NSR. I have never fished the NSR.

I have my fly rod, any suggestions?

My suggestion is leave the fly rod at home, and bring the spinning rod, get yourself some white and bright jigs or a pickeral rig and a weight(I like to use a 2 ounce), bait up and it's go time.

fly fish for goldeye, little streamer patterns will work of small nymphs, they are a good fight on fly gear

There is a nymph hatch right now. Lots of Goldeye rising last night. I was baitfishing so didn't try. Enjoy the NSR tarpon fishing!

Take black leeches, bow river buggers and dark clousers. Have caught goldeye walleye and sauger in the nsr on those patterns

Minnow streamers for the goldeye and mooneye. If you want some big action take some big pike streamers and flies. Over the years I have caught a few big pike from the 10 to 25 pound range.

Good wet flies to use are #3/0 chartreuse (or red, black, yellow, and pink) Double Bunny flies with crystal flash in the tail. Also, size #1/0 to 4/0 minnow/baitfish imitations, and large sized woolly buggers. Top-water offerings could be a deer hair frog or mouse imitations.

the nsr is untapped by the fly fishers. Clousers will catch you anything in the river. I recommend 5 feet of 8-10lb tippet minimum and a sink tip.

ive seen lots of guys fish with flies on the NSR, mainly at White mud creek mouth to the NSR, just off fox drive and white mud, That's about all I can help with, lol have not touched a fly rod in 10 years lol

but hhave seen guys there lots, mainly going for goldeye

Thanks for all the replies. I am back on 'business' again. I hope to try the NSR tomorrow. I brought both rods this time. Luck has it, the fishin hole is across the street from my hotel.

one big drawback about fly fishing the nsr is finding spots with room to cast. good luck.
