Upland Game Bird

Hey yall,

I have hunting upland game bird before but never with my bow and was hoping to get out and try it this fall I just have a couple questions. What type of arrowhead should I be using and? And are there any special regulations regarding hunting game bird with a bow?

Quick scan of regs doesn't reveal any restrictions or specifications, as long as your arrowhead doesn't explode. ;) Good luck.

GAME BIRD

It is unlawful to


hunt a migratory game bird using

a firearm loaded with a single bullet
shot, other than non-toxic shot,
a cross-bow
a shotgun that is of a larger size than 10 guage.

hunt any game bird using

a shotgun in which the magazine and chamber combined will hold more than three rounds of ammunition,
a trap, or
bait.
Note: see item 12 (below) for additional restrictions for hunting Merriam's turkey.

hunt game birds in WMU 410 with other than a bow and arrow or falconry bird.
hunt game birds in WMU 212 or 248 with other than a bow and arrow, a cross-bow, shotgun or falconry bird.
hunt Merriam's turkey using

a weapon other than a shotgun, cross-bow or a bow and arrow,
a shotgun with a bore diameter smaller than 20 gauge, or
shot size smaller than No. 6 shot or larger than No. 2 shot.

Any tip is fine I flatten the ends of field points I find the tips for small game break to easy

I prefer Judo points...they thump grouse and if they pass through or you miss, the claws on the head grab grass, sticks and the ground to slow down the arrow.

I bought a couple of flu-flu's for that very purpose. Waaaay easier to find. :D

I just use a hand gun shell casing on tip of arrow, very blunt end and can always find my arrow. Does a great job on chickens :)

I use judos as well. You can usually find your arrow after.

hey guys, with a body shot on a bird with a blunt object like a judo, etc...does it have a bad effect on the meat,like a huge bruising area you have to cut out?
Just wondering...I'll be hunting chickens with my bow this year. No more than a 4 10 at 15 yds though i guess. Just curious.

They can make a mess....best to aim for the top of the breast/head/neck area and not centre mass.

When i used to hunt grouse with a bow, I used to use G5 Small Game heads.

I like G5 SGH but the judos work good too.... I'd say the judos grab the ground better!

I've used the judos, G5 smallgame and broadheads . All do the job but judo seems to tear things up . As Lefty said , try head shots at close range .

Snarros work awesome for head shots and saving the meat. But they are a bit of a pain to carry in your quiver.

I body hit a grouse a few years ago with a judo and it stuck and held with just the tangs of the judo. The grouse flew straight up, with he weight of the arrow keeping him from leveling off. He went sort of straight up, like a helicopter, to about as high as a telephone pole. He couldn't hold any more and came down just inside the bush line. Then he ran dragging the arrow behnd him into very dense bush and I lost him. They can be pretty tough sometimes.
