Lake Whites, coming into the shallows.

Just a quick note for the Lake Whitefish crowd; LW's coming into the shallows now,, recommended wire worm would be white below a bobber, or a single maggot on a bare hook. For the fly fisherfolk, anything in the range of beige for dry's and black for wet's.

Big hen pike are not far behind, so, start salting your herring.

This is info for shore fishers.

I've never targeted lake whites.
They would probably be a blast on the fly rod.
I'm off work & free to fish all next week; so far, only have solid plans for Sunday & Monday. Feel free to invite me out to chase whites any other day...:)

Steve, chironomids under the indicator and boatman work. Pretty good fight if you catch them in the shallows and they want to find deeper water

How shallow are we talking here for the whites? <10 ft or so or around that? I want to go after some whites on the fly this fall and ive never targeted them before. How deep do you set the wire worm? 2ft from bottom or even closer? Thinking of heading to newell on friday and wouldnt mind attempting them on the fly. Thanks for the help in advance.

less than 6fow and a foot under surface to 4ft down just like ice fishing..

if they are feeding on the top as in rising then I fish only a foot down

Chris we did best on July 6 which was just after Dark Moon we got 11 or 12 in 3 hours .. and had more on .. started fishing at 7 am and done by 10 am headed home .. just our limit is 2 each in National Park.. I ice fish mainly in morning but u can catch any time .. :thinking-006:also I caught this summer at all times when the Major feed was on or Minor

Wabamun whitefish are a blast to catch. Sometimes you gotta forget the pike and target other species like the whites.

everything that speckles suggested. I'm talking as shallow as two feet but one could toss a dry or wet fly and strip it in, in cm increments. With a bobber - and not a spherical one - about 12 inches max below.

The weed and grass under water is full of little white crawlers and Tuesday night the mosquitoes and other bugs were so thick you couldn't breathe.

While targeting pike I lost one on a small smelt and a giant hook,,, tug'o war with smelts is only fun until the smelt rips.

At McGregor you need to be south of where the nets are set as they seem to have a route in the lake. Your best bet with a bobber is at the causeway.

What kind of areas do you usually find the whitefish in the shallows? Places with weeds nearby? Rocky bottom? Bare sandy bottom?

I might have to try and catch one out at Wab but have absolutely no idea how other then the info posted here so far.

I would lean toward a gravel bottom with a few fist or grapefruit sized rocks thrown in the mix for the eggs to fall between.

I'm no expert on lake whitefish, that's just from what I have seen in the past.

Yep they were in a couple fow when we were coming home checking along the way ,,, 150 in that school .. we saw +500 different fish in less than 4 fow and I had 5 or 6 take downs !!!!:sHa_shakeshout: with a hook up twice and caught 2 .. its frustrating :angry3:when 50 fish swim past your hook but its also exhilarating when they come up and take it:47b20s0:.. Fish On !!!

Lots of Pike in the weeds but nothing that would make me break out the Big Streamers or my spin cast

Both Whites were 4#1oz

we have pic's of some of the schools and one of my 4#ers .. young Loon / Grebe/Mergansers
also saw the 6# ers in 6 fow would have to go down as they were right on the bottom but when you see some broad backs you know that hey this is the big ones

nice whitefish there speckle , I managed a couple rockies to the shore today on the bow and was impressed with the fight in the current . A fly rod must be a blast

Do you know if the whites do something similar down in the prairie likes like MacGregor, Sylvan and Gull?
