Was it tagged ?

Nice sturgeon though and thanks for shareing.

12 to 15lb should be about a good guess!!

FisherPotch

Thats the biggest 12-15 lb fish I've ever seen in my life!!!! Look at it guys if that fellow is say 6ft tall the fish is likely like four feet long!! Sure it doesn't have huge girth but if the fish wasnt over 15lbs I'd eat my hat.

Now I'm interested in what you boys think this guy would go.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w90/FisherPotch/100_2021-1-1.jpg

I'd think ximmix's fish has more length but a good deal less girth. My geon is right around four feet in length.

fisherpotch id say no more then 15. I know they seem to be alot heavyer but they really arent. The one buckmaster caught was about 38 inches I forget the exact measurement but was almost the same length as tyhe cradle and it was I think aboput 13 pounds weighed it right in the cradle.

Buckmaster what did that one weigh?

but none the less there not as heavy as youd suspect.

check this fish calculator out. Type in length and girth.

LOL I like Drano's guesses.

Using that calculator at 46 inches length and 20 inches girth it gave me a little beter than 28 lbs. I've caught walleye we measured at fifteen inches of girth, if the sturgeon I posted didn't have 20 inches of girth I think I'd eat my hat, pass it, and then eat it again. At 46 inches im also being modest. I stilll think that ximmix's fish would beat 20 for sure.

Hey buck any chance you could post the photo of the fish you guys weighed?

And by the way the user name is FisherPotch. The t and n are purdy far apart on the keyboard for me to believe it was an accident, I'd greatly appreciate if you'd correct that.

I took this pic a couple weeks ago. I also measured this fish. She was 43 inches long with a 20 inch girth. According to the calculator BBJ posted that makes her 26.5 pounds, though I'd give her at least another 5. I'd say FisherPotch's sweetie is pretty similar.

I'd say ximmix2007's fish is similar in length, but skinnier. 20 poundish?

Guys think about this those catfish 39 inches long 16 inches girth only weighed 25 pounds. and those catfish I caught were alot fatter then any of them sturgeon.Surre its a diffrent spieces but still you get the idea.Instead of babbling back and forth get a digital scale and next time you get a sturgeon and weigh it.What you find will surprize you.

Hi Brandon,

Yes it is as BBJ pointed out. I will let a few more estimates come in then I will tell you all the actual weight. Another formula that works is girth x girth x length divided by 800

Here's my estimates of the fish weights.

Ximmix2007 - 12-15 lbs
Fisherpotch - 22-26 lbs
Fishin Fool - 20-24 lbs
Alex K - 24-30 lbs

If you post their fork lenghts I can look in my database of fish I have caught and give you the range of weights for fish that length.

I would say BBJ guessed it the closest. The fish I am holding was caught while fishing with Daryl Waters. He is the biologist who has been doing the Sturgeon study for many years. We had this fish in his cradle that was layed out broadside across an aluminum cartopper. Then the fish was measured, wieghed, tagged, fin clipped for age then released. So the actual weight was 39.5lbs. As for the comment I am holding the fish out, have you ever tried to hold a 40lb fish out, I know I can't and still smile. My point behind all of this is judging from pictures is a very difficult thing to do. I would say if they are acompanied with length and girth it is much easier and more accurate.

P.S. The show you watched where the guys got lost was Fishing Alberta, unfortunately I was not along on that trip. If I was they would not have gotten lost. As for guides, in some instances we did use guides that were more knowledgable on certain bodies of water or to promote a lodge or guiding outfit.

Best Regards and Good Fishing

That fish of Alex's is a Monster! I'da guessed beating 40. Now I'm wondering if the fish is alot older than most the others posted, or if it's a White Sturgeon not a Lake Sturgeon. Just looking at the plates they look very large. It looks like a White Sturgeon but since he was with Mr. Waters I'd assume it was in Alberta.

Alex K

Hi Fisherpotch,

The fish I am holding is a North Saskatchewan River fish (Lake Sturgeon) not a White Sturgeon. According to Daryl this fish was extremely young for it's size. That is why it had such apparent plates on it still. The young fish need them for protection from predators, as they age they will disapear. That's why most of the other fish guy's have posted they are pretty much gone. This was an odd fish, but an interesting speciman for Daryl. He suspected it might be a sterile fish, explaining the enhanced growth rate.

Alex Kreis

FisherPotch

Very interesting!!!. I was thinking the wrong way about it then. The smallest Sturgeon I've caught purdy much had spikes for plates, so that makes allot of sense that your sturgeon you posted has such predominate plates. I figured something seemed fishy lol. It's an incredible specimen no doubt.

Sterile hey! That would explain an enhanced rate of growth that is for sure. Similar to triploids I guess. To bad though, a big fish like that would be a good spawner I'd assume and our sturgeon numbers could use all the help they can get. Did Daryl have any theories on why it would be sterile?

Alex K
09-09-2008, 11:08 AM
Fisherpotch,

It was only a theory of Daryl's that it may be sterile considering how young it was and how large it was. As for how they become sterile. it just happens sometimes naturally.

What would this one run? I've heard many estimates but never actually sat down and figured out the weights. It was 8 feet 9 inches long and I'm not exactly sure of the girth. It sound like there are many people on here who know their sturgeon very well and it would be interesting to know approximate weight.

Those are some beautiful fish, are they from the dinousar age? I've never caught one my self but my father has in prince albert, sask. Last summer i was fishing in my spot on hermitage and this older fella came along and started fishing by me and we started talking and he said his buddy pulled out a couple of sturgeons from the exact spot i was fishing in and i asked him how he caught them but he said "ohh thats a secret son" haha this fella was close to 65 but had alot of pictures of big fish caught in the spot we were in through out years. i was wondering if anyone could give me a hand for possibly hooking into one of these bad boys please? no secrets please i learned pretty well i'd say haha.

We fished the SSR pretty hard last fall for sturgeon and caught alot.
Biggest was over 5' long and weighed under 60lbs.
We do not usually weigh them but that day a fellow who actually does sturgeon tagging was at the same hole.
We try to get a quick picture and let em go.
The sturgeon was tagged already but the tag was so old he wanted to put a new one on ,weigh and measure it at the same time.
We were actually surprised when he weighed the fish cause we thought it would weigh alot more!
What we have found is that they do not weigh as much as a person thinks. There is alot of slimness to a sturgeon that does not add up to big weight.

04-07-2009, 08:43 PM
The only way the sturgeon tagging guy weighs them is wiith a rope tied around their tail, connected to the scale.
Does no harm to the fish and keeps you away from the gills etc!!

He used a cradle to get him onto the boat for measuring and tagging but used the tail rope method for weighing and release.
