If you wanna fish for brookies in lakes, check the SRD stocking data and it will tell you when and where.

How far you want to drive? High River is a long way from a lot of the brookie lakes I frequent.

Basically, use anything orange the last 2 weeks of November/ first week of December. Bait, where allowed, is a good idea. I have used deer heart, yellow salmon eggs, and minnow heads (check regs as many eastern slope waters do not allow the use of minnows for bait).

Ice is usually sketchy, but that is the recipe for hard water brook trout.

Fish shallow.

If highway 40 opens all the way, head out to elbow lake. It's not too far and it's got tons of stunted brookies. very short but steep hike

Don't forget about the winter highway closure, Dec. 15 I think.
