Lake Whitefish Ice Fishing Question...

Hey, I know it's a bit early still, but, ice-fishing season will be here soon! :) My question is regarding the habits of Lake Whitefish, and, whether it's factual that Lake Whitefish tend to congregate in shallower depths in the early season (Dec/Jan), and then move into deeper waters as the winter months pass. Is there any truth to this?

i find the whites to be hanging around 7-10 feet of water most of the winter, later in the season(feb-mar) when the burbot spawn i find them in 10-20 feet of water

Yea, that does make some sense then. I remember ice-fishing (for example) Battle Lake 3-4 years ago, and seeing all kinds of White-Fish in 5-10 feet of water close to the shore - (it seemed you could spot one on the fish-camera every 5 minutes). Then, I spent 2 days this last February back in the same area, and saw maybe 3 Whites in 2 days! I began to wonder if by February, they had already moved into deeper water, and that I had showed up too late.

Hey I see them in Dec in shallow as the spawn is on 2fow to 8fow they had roe in them till almost Jan out here .. we had great days if you find the right flats were the schools are here is some picture from last Dec

Yup, I think for the shallower water (which is where I like to hang out), I'll have to be gettin' out there a bit earlier this year!

np the key for us was early in the morning as you can see we were heading home by noon
here is a couple of summer school of Lake Whites pictures we saw them in winter like this as in 10 fish go by hole in less than a minute
