I am looking at a lund fisherman 1700 with a 150 Hp on it. Is this too big a motor for this boat?

Too big, as in too many horsepower?
The boat should have a plate on it somewhere that will indicate the maximum rated horsepower for this boat. I could be wrong but I believe this boat is rated for a maximum of 135 horsepower.
Although the 150 is a bit over the max rating I would not be afraid to run it like that, particularly if it is a newer Mercury Opti - the 150 is the same weight as the 135. I would be more concerned about a bunch of extra weight hanging off the transom than if the motor has a few extra horses.

I'm sure you could also reinforce the transom if that's the only concern about a motor over the max capacity

I'm a fan of a bit less of a motor.

not too sure what you want the boat to be able to do; i have a 16.6 that i use for fishing and wakeboarding that runs with a 85hp outboard. she'll only do about 60km/h, but she can still pull my 220lb ***** up on a board, and i've never used more than 50L of fuel in a day of running it hard.
just my 0.02 cents
cheers

It seems like a really good deal but I did read a few bad reports about the direct injected motors so think I wll shy away from it. It s about to sell on ebay for 16,000 and the same boat up here is over 30.

Year? Outboard brand?

I wouldn't be afraid of any of the Merc Optimaxes or later model Evinrude ETECs, they are EXCELLENT outboards.
