I went out to Winchell Lake in the 3rd week of Sept, we landed and released about 30 small bows in 3 hrs. All of the fish were around the same size 8" or so, nothing any bigger. Usually by late Sept one can usually expect a few nice ones 11" or better. Makes one wonder why they didn't grow much since May when the lake is stocked.

1. The amount of fish stocked
2. The amount of available food.
3. The shallow small lake.
4. Its only a six month season to grow.

The lake winter kills every year before Christmas.

Fun and close to home for me. Pretty little lake in the morning.

I was out a couple of weeks ago and the fish I got were all just under a foot.

And some fish do winter I will go out before they stock it in the spring and do well.

I was out there in the middle of september and caught alot of the usual 8-10 inchers, but caught a few in the 14-16 range, which was a total first for me for that lake. I guess it didnt winterkill last year.

But I think I'm the same as most people. Ice fishing is usually good until Christmas, then nothing...

I have caught some big ones in the spring as well, I think that it does pretty well in the winter. It is deeper than it looks, if I remember correctly it is close to 30 feet deep in the middle.

30 feet is what the divers said the day the grader went through the ice.

Road grader, gravel floater, leveller of legendary proportions.
The grader was out there to clean the ice and discovered the ice conditions "defied the parameters of predictability". That must have been a moment to remember... Apparently the battery hung in there for a while and you could see the yellow light flashing as it was decending. So I was told by a local years ago...

Is it still down there?

As far as I know it is sunk deep in the mud, how deep I do not know. Apparently out of site.

Why was it on the lake in the first place. Seams like an odd place fro a grader.
