View Full Version : Instead of store bought pickerel or jackfish rigs?

I have seen some negative comments surrounding the store bought rigs.

What is it about them that is not liked?

Is it the rigs themselves?

The way some people use them? Maybe they are not using them properly.

Can someone please explain.

What else do people use?

it's because they tend to get snagged and broken off with the bait still attached. Scavenging fish then pick this up dragging along with them the weight and hook until they either slowly die or get hooked by someone else.

not sure what other alternatives there are... maybe a pick rig with 1 hook and a lighter line attaching the weight, so when you snag, you break off just the weight and retrieve your hooks. I'm sure those sturgeon specialists could tell you more.

I met a old local boy a few years ago while fishing in the Peace River that tought me to just grab a handful of 1/2" nuts or a couple washers and some small elastic bands, use the elastics to attach the weights to your rig so when it gets cought you can break the elastic instead of your line, then just tie another elastic and nut/washer/etc, on and keep fishing, no broken lines, no lost gear/fish, and it's cheap. I've been doing it this way ever since and it works great.:sHa_shakeshout:

its hard to say because even if you use some other rig that's also baited and such and it gets snagged and broken off it still yields the same results. growing up we just made a 2 loops in the main line above the sinker maybe 12" apart and attached the pretied hooks to them which is simular if you break off. when in an area where there is the possibility of getting your line snagged and broken off with bait i personally think its a no win situation when doing the bar fishing with bait. i tried and still use the rubber band on the sinker and line thing but have noticed its not always the sinker that snags, sometimes its the baited hook that catches an underwater log or stump. i now bypass this whole senario with slip bobbers now.

This is what I use, usually only one hook on 6 or 7 inches of line attached to the mainline, I use the same strength braid to snell my hooks. Tie the end of the mainline to a small swivel then tie a foot or so of lighter line to that and attach my weight to it. 95% of the time its the weight that gets snagged, so the lighter line breaks the weight off, and I get to bring in the fish. I use Palomar knots for everything, no metal involved, line is straight from the fishes mouth to your rod so you feel the bite instantly. when the snell gets twisted up or after a few sturgeon I just cut it all off and retie it, takes about 2 minutes.
