Well it all started about a few weeks ago after EvilEddie and I got together and spent a day floating around catching some little pike. He had mentioned that he had never caught a brook trout and he really wanted to give it a shot before freeze up.
Now for anybody who knows me, I seem to have a really hard time catching the girly fish, but nevertheless I decided to give it a go and see what happens.
After talking with another forum member at wing night we chose a lake around 3 hours away that is supposed to be stocked with brookies, as well as having some decent rainbows in it.
So Saturday morning rolls around and we meet up at 6am, make sure the trucks are gassed up, grab a quick coffee and a bite to eat at McD's and we hit the road. The drive was pretty uneventful, and we got to the lake around 10am. We did a quick check of the campsite situation, and then we dumped our little tin boats in the water and got at 'er!
Since it's a new lake that we weren't familiar with we started off just trolling along the shore to get a feel for what was down there. It wasn't long before EvilEddie nailed his first rainbow, and it was a gooder!

After a little more trolling he got another just a little smaller. At this point I'd gotten a little away from him, but after watching him catch 2 trolling the same Flatfish I was using, I decided to change it up to a Panther Martin with a little chunk of worm...again with no luck.
Eventually I got to a spot along some reeds where I had seen a couple blips of fish hitting the surface, so I figured since the trolling thing isn't working out for me I'll try something a little different. I tossed out my anchor and rigged up my second rod with a 1/64oz black jig head with about a 1" piece of worm threaded on, and a small bobber about 3' up. I tossed it out towards the reeds and sat down to wait, but I didn't have to wait long, because within probably 2 minutes I saw the bobber go down, pop back up, then go down again with gusto! I grabbed the rod, picked up the slack line, set the hook, and was rewarded by hearing the drag on my reel start screaming! After a fight that felt like it lasted forever I finally managed to boat what is by far my largest rainbow to date.

Unfortunately I couldn't locate my scale for this trip, and I was so jazzed about this big ol' rainbow that I didn't even think to measure it. :sign0161:
So figuring I was on to something I stuck around in the area and repeated my experiment and managed several more rainbows, mainly in the 18"-21" range, with only a couple recent stockers showing up.

We kept one little pan fry for lunch, but it wasn't the best tasting fish I've ever had...probably be good if we went back in the winter though. Seriously, I think we only caught 3 this small all weekend...crazy!

As the day wound down the fishing slowed off, but we stayed out there til we were pretty much totally in the dark.

We pulled the boats up on shore, emptied our stuff out and headed up to our campsite, built a fire and cooked up some burgers before finally calling it a day.
