Just remember that the depths listed below are for consistent "good" ice thickness, which is not always the case. During first ice, always check as you go, whether you are walking or later when driving. If you are fishing around points, narrows, or underwater structure where there can be current, the ice can be much thinner in these areas, so take care.

I've been known to fish less than 2"! Of course, never in water that's deeper than my waist.

I'd stick to a 4" minimum rule to be safe. A warm day on less that 4" could cause you some problems. Make sure to bring some ice picks and a good rope!

always thought it had to be thinker then that
