I like 4 lb berkley vanish for whites.
Try and have your wire worm as horizontal as possible when you tie your wire worm.
Colors change day to day yellow white green red orange are all good bets!!

Sometimes a single maggot will help!

I tie them on w/a Palomar knot (just like a drop shot rig for walleye/bass).
And I usually tie them 1' up from a small teardrop tungsten jig.

I have found that red w/ yellow bead and copper w/red bead are the most productive wireworm patterns @ Gull.

As for the toothy critters, FOD w/minnow or silver/blue Williams wobbler tipped the same way work great. But for the big girls nuthin' beats deadstickin' a big ole smelt.

This is gonna sound strange but the best attractor for me last year was a big green pumpkin tube jig filled w/scent. Pike would come SCREAMING in but just wouldn't bite. Have the spoons ready, drop 'em once they arrive and bang.

tie as usual, then move knot around hook eye til it
hangs horizontal, the wireworm is reasonably light so just moving the knot usually does the trick, test hang out of water for ' horizontality' then lower into water

Assortment of colors in wire worms. And a couple of wataskwins just in case.

Stop in at "The wooden shoe" convenience store, and ask them which wire worms are selling the best.

Line is even more important. Last year I was doing quite well....then spooled up with spider wire that was suppose to be invisible. Well that was the end of Me catching anything. Didn't clue in to what happened, as not every day out is productive or good fishing. Just thought I was off my game. Crap line wasted my last two weeks of prime fishing till I has a " forehead slapping" realization.

For whites, nothing more than 6lb.

Absolutely true, good advice.

As for wetaskiwins both Sportsmen's Den and Wolverine have a good assortment.
Look for FOD, blue and red as well as the old faithfuls hammered Gold and Copper.

For whites I like the heavily weighted wire worms because you can feel them better. I always start with a red colour to imitate the bloodworms. I have also had alot of success on yellow. If the worms aren't working I go with a bell and bounce it hard off the bottom and stir up the dirt. I also have found that a tiny 5 of diamonds spoon works well. The fluttering attraction really seams to drive the whites crayyy. haha if you wanna catch them just jig all the way to the top of the ice slowly, then drop your lure right to the bottom. When the lure falls, it seams to really get the attention of the fish. I've caught whites in 4-15 feet of water but Ive found the 8-11 feet range is the best. Look for a sandy bottom too. I know the Gull/Sylvan lakes really well as i've fished them the past 10 years. So if you wanna get out shoot me a pm!

Fishing Hole carries the Wataskawins. At least Edmonton last year. Yellow is a color for them.

For Wesatkiwins as mentioned the fishing hole has them.

I like to aggressively rip jig them and flutter in the sand my best success has been with late season whites around the beginning of march with this technique!!

Bells work the best on Sylvan Lake. They will work on Gull also. Yellow, gold or silver. BEL

do you typically tip these bell hooks with anything like a maggot or just empty hook like a wireworm?

biggamehunter
11-20-2013, 10:45 PM
I've never tipped my wireworm/bell with maggots . My best colours for bells have been gold and chartreuse. Bounce them around in the dirt and then slowly bring them to the top of the ice once in a while them quickly slam them back down. Pure dark red wireworms, or red/yellow work the best for the worms. Color doesn't really matter tho. I've caught them on almost every colour.

I was wondering are the fish biting the whole treble hook?

bwackwabbit

Depends on how you fish 'em.

As described above ripped up to bottom of the ice and dropped to the bottom usually gets them to chase and strike quickly swallowing the whole treble.

Tipped w/maggots and suspended "quivering" results in bites on one or two prongs of the treble only.

I use them w/a slightly different technique and have had some success.
Drop them quickly to the bottom over sandy flats to stir up a cloud. Then 3 small "hops" 6" off bottom 5 seconds apart. Wait 30 seconds and repeat.

albertafisher,

I've tried some chironomids and have had some decent success. What colors have worked well for you? Thanks

I thought chronomids would work as well, but I got skunked when I tried them last year. Lots of fish around, just no hits.

I'm so pumped to go to try our luck at the whites again:) for us wetaskawin's would get they're attention but they would prefer a wire worm and hammer them.
