Here are a couple pics of the 17lb burbot we caught today on the Peace River. Last year biggest was between 10-11 lbs so this tops the scales for us. Anyone else catch big burbot through the ice?

That is a huge burb, congratulations on a nice fish.

Sorry but someone has to say it.... If I'm reading the regs correctly the Peace River is closed to angling between Nov 1 and March 31. Just a heads up, I might be mistaken but please research bodies of water beforehand. Cheers

You are correct.

However, he could've caught it somewhere else and just said the peace. I know I would haha.

Thanks for all the great replies! To answer a couple questions, it was not on the peace, a river that feeds the peace that is open during this time, but a stones throw away from the peace. And being that it is a smaller river there is not much or any of a current until you get closer to the peace. Overall good day though we limited out in Pickerel in no time! Cheers!

Perfect, good to know you're ahead if the legalities. I wish we had a place to limit out on pickeral that easily. Cheers....

Pickerel/Walleye, I suppose one is the American name and one Canadian I can never remember. So for the contest I printed out the card and got a tape and I'm all ready to start competing, but it is not for river caught fish? I don't have any lakes with fish in them around here, just the rivers that have fish populations. I wonder if there is a way I can still un-officially post pics in that thread? Can any one enlighten me in this matter? Thanks

As long as you can prove it was caught through the ice your good to go. Only open water fish are not allowed to be entered...:)

I know most of the Peace River, where is this tributary? I'd like to look it up, in the interest of learning more about this river I live next to.

BTW, my copy of the regulations say that all tributaries are close as well.

I believe a named waterway that appears in the regs ceases to be classified a tributary?

So one would need to know exactly where they are and look to see if it is named in the regs.

Hi everyone. I just had to quit being a lurker over this one. It is really bothering me that someone has been able to find a legal river to fish in in the winter anywhere within 300 miles from where I live. I live in zone ES4 and am an avid ice fisher. The regulations I have read state that all rivers, streams, and tributaries in ES4 and NB3 are closed between Nov. 1 and May 31, some are closed even longer. Check this link http://www.albertafishingguide.com/location/water/all/peace-river-tributaries. If anyone can steer me in the right direction on where to look for regulations that are contrary to what I have found please help. To the OP congrats on the catch and for finding a winter fishing hole up here that I have not been able to.

Very few options. Not the best idea to say you were fishing closed waters, even worse to actually do it.

He didn't know that there were that many guys who know the regs in and out, and will call him out,

I still think it was on the peace river, but that's my opinion !

If you seen the pic,..... That didn't look like a little tributary !

It should be a concern when people post about fishing CLOSED waters.

Whether it was a diversion by the op, a mistake or other, it shouldn't be ignored.

Too bad, wicked fish.

I know exactly where those photos were taken, and I'm convinced it was an unintentional mistake.

At that particular location there would be subsistence fisherman.
I'm guessing he saw others fishing there and assumed it was open.

Careless, for sure, but not intentionally ignoring the law, I believe.

Given his occupation, I think it would be it's an easy mistake to make. And given his occupation, I'm sure he has way too much to loose to intentionally break the law and then brag about it.

I have no doubt he feels very badly about what has happened and I have faith that he will never make that mistake again.

Its out there now, so there could well be legal consequences.

I think the best thing to do is to leave this to law enforcement to decide what they wish to do from this point.

The rest of us can learn a valuable lesson from this, if we wish to.
Check and double check the regulations people, or this could be you.

We need not discuss this any further.

Thread closed.
