Seen as we are all starting to venture out I figure its a good time to start a thread for people to enform the rest of our AO members of any hazards we come across during our hard water season that may save someone from a inconvenience or worse. Good luck, be safe and HAVE FUN:sHa_shakeshout:

Stay away from pressure ridges, inlets, weedbeds...
Keep on or near established trails as much as possible, unless you know the lake AND are condfident in ice thickness.

Im sure I missed some... anyone else?

SLOW DOWN , no more then 20 Km/h on the Ice ! ,

Driving fast on ice creates an underwater wake , that stays in front of your vehicle.

NEVER drive underneath a trestle or any type of bridge or structure , Ice does not form the same near bridges .

Be careful around active beaver houses. My fishing partner stepped through the ice once on a cold Feb day. Ice was only 2 inches where he went in.

The best part of having three feet of ice is ripping down the ice a vehicle lol

Many lakes are well known to have many springs. Weak ice . Battle lake is one of them. Be very careful on this lake. Devils is another.

If possible, do not cross a ice ridge.
Do not drill a hundred holes close to and around your truck.

Steer clear of cattails. Our lakes can have natural gas pockets that get trapped under the ice creating a weak spot as the ice does not freeze as thick. UNLESS YOU ARE EXPERIENCED WITH RIVER ICE PLEASE STAY OFF THE RIVERS. Constant water flow under the ice will keep it weak in places and if you fall through you may be swept under the ice by the current.

Try not to congregate in the same area as a lot of other people, specially if there's a lot of vehicles. I know there's honey holes that everyone likes to frequent but too much weight in one area will cause problems. Do some exploring.

This is another hazard to watch for that nobody has covered. Instead of typing out the warning, I thought I would just post the vid.

"That's what happens when you drink in the morning."

haha. Very nice pike though. Good warning all the same.

Roll the windows down at least part way when driving on the ice so you can open the doors should you go through.

Take your seatbelts off, crack the doors open, get dogs and people out of the cab-seats or difficult escape routes.

Walk or snowmobile if you really want to stay safer.

I concur,,,, always bring a decent length of rope. Always bring extra clothes, even if you don't go through it's nice to have dry socks to put on for the drive home after a day of flood water working it's way in.

We also carry a blowtorch with an automatic igniter,, makes lighting a fire very quick in the wind or any weather for that matter.
