Fishing in Edmonton

I'm looking for some good spots to go fishing around Edmonton. I usually go to that park off of Fox Dr. where there is a stream running into the N. Sask., but this year there is a lot of construction in the area and haven't caught jack (in the past have caught some nice walleye and goldeyes there). I've also gone to a stocked pond up in the North East (with the wife), but that was pretty lame (didn't catch anything bigger than a large minnow).

I'd like to find a good place in the city to go once in a while. Any suggestions, please?

I don't think there is much choice within Edmonton,
well the NSR and Hermitage Park , I think there is a stocked pond in St. ALbert, and possibly the big lake - I heard there is pike there...
you gotta drive a bit outside the city to get a decent bite.

In a week or 3 the North sask river NSR will be booming like mad .

There are lots of spots in and around the City on the North Saskatchewan River, keep this in mind....if you are fishing where its easy to get to then your chances are slim.....try spots that not to many people fish at.....I have always had decent luck down by the Strathscona science park....just off 17th street south of hwy 16. Where sun ridge ski hill is. its a bit of a hike down and then back up but fishing is usually decent. Another good place to fish the NSR is near the Dawson Bridge, or across the way from rafter's landing. Where the Edmonton River boat sits.

Where you were fishing at the whitemud creek across the way by the bridge there is a outfall great pool there just be patient.

Just always be careful fishing in these areas watch out for soil erosion and watch your footing.... I watch a friend slide right into the river once......he was able to get out but was soaked and whining for the rest of the day....lol




hope this helps..... if you fish the whitemud creek area again......go down stream a bit and cast out maybe 20 feet. use worms and wait 20mins you start to catch.

i still say that dawson park down town is the best spot on the nsr.. i have caught the alta record gold eye there but did not know it at the time so i released it...oh well...that was 6 years ago..have caught everything in that hole..

Are there any fish-holding ponds in Edmonton? And is there anything worth catching in some of the little streams that empty into the NSR, like the Whitemud?

Hermitage Ponds within Edmonton holding nice 10" - 14" rainbows,
don't know how they would survive in the winter , but summer time its a great place to cast a fly.

Id eat them out of there west of the city , but nothing south of Edmonton .

I sure do , Im not worried about that . If I were to eat them id eat them as I catch them near the Dam . Ive seen guys just south of town here catch and eat them , mostly asian , and pakistani or lebaneese which ever they are . not my idea of a good time . Ill go to the grosery store and buy Captain hiliner . Or eat deer steaks or a big ole T bone .

if you like crayfish, you can catch a dozen....other than that there are baitfish, shiners etc in the creeks

what is usually the best lure to use in the NSR??

depends what you are fishing for...pickrel rigs and bottom bouncers work well for walleye Spoons and jijs work week for walleye and pike. I like to use leeches on my pickrel rigs and bottom bouncers...

The best thing from shore is probably a pickeral rig with dew worms on baitholder hooks!!

Devon has been pretty good for me on the NSR. Lots of Jack and Wally's. Found a nice hole bordered by a beaver dam complete with a small beach.

The construction may make the access difficult, but try across the bridge by the whitemud creek mouth. There's a spillway that makes a neat little hole, fish bait on the bottom or under a bobber. Depending on water levels there can be quite a few mini-holes when walking along the river bank.
