as many of you know we lost my male hunting dog almost a year ago and had looked far and wide for a field trial quality golden to replace him in good time.
Had pretty much given up finding a hard going pup so took my female down to Ron Biscke yesterday to breed her Buddy the all time top point open golden ever (155 Open all age points).

While there Ron asked how my hunting dog Bertuzzi was doing and I said he died from cancer last February and I had had no luck finding a high energy field quality dog to replace him. he went to his computer and copied a field trial ad from Bill Bennet in Ontario (second highest open point dog in North America "Jazz" (138 open all age points) advertising field golden pups born November 25th ready to go to new homes in late January. Preference to field trial competitive obedience and hunting homes only.

Guess we qualified as "puppy breath" is on the way to Alberta end of the month. I had the choice of 2 Alpha males but one has a slight slash of white on the crown like my old field trial dogs Nip, Amick and even Bertuzzi so we picked him. Will have him chasing ducks and maybe even geese by fall 2014! Doesn't he look ferocious? Names? Should be Objibway or Cree to hold with tradition.

Lucky dog!!!! Both of you.

Yes Dear and I were looking at pics of golden pups last night. No, I am not thinking about getting one. I'm a labaholic and I just need to accept that.
However I said that those goldens really are beautiful looking dogs and if you get a working golden, it is truly a thing of beauty.

I hunted for years with a buddy who had a field trial golden. Never had a bad day in the field with that dog.:sHa_shakeshout:

I had a collie named Muskwa....Cree for bear

wwbirds

Called her Muckwa for "bear", so think muckwa and muskwa are interchangeable for bear??

Jim don't tell "yes dear" there is still one male left in this litter. Only one of the top line of field goldens in North America right now. took a year of looking to find the right one. Bird wing testing is being done by Bill tomorrow.

Nice looking pup, my last Gsp made it to 16 and 1 month when i decided her time was done. That was in July. I can feel the pull of getting what will be my 4th Gsp getting stronger every month. I haven't been without a dog beside me for over 16 yrs, picks of new pups don't help lol. Congrats on the new addition.

Marley is still down at Ron's in Lethbridge. she wasn't standing for buddy so we may have missed the opportunity. Buddy eager but Marley snarley. May vet her today as took her down as soon as bleeding stopped but may have missed it. Know for sure later today if I am picking her up or waiting for the ties to happen.

Bagwan-Not sure Todd was impressed the first time as my oldest son named Bertuzzi after meeting Todds family near Sudbury while we were on vacation there. Our friends are his parents neighbors on Deloges Road. Was Mikes favorite player for a long time and his family gave him lots of souvenirs and treated him like royalty after showing up at our friends BBQ in a Bertuzzi Canucks jersey.

My pick of males was most aggressive with ducks and not as interested in pigeon given the choice.

However the whole litter is very birdy:

Take care.

I've never met a Lab I didn't like. Beautiful puppy there WW. :)

wwbirds
01-11-2014, 10:29 AM
Hey thanks, but it is not a lab!
Golden is long coated separate breed. You might be thinking yellow lab which is short coated lab like black or choc but with yellow coat. they are sometimes referred to as golden labs in Europe and Britain.

Too bad you missed getting yours bred.
I have a friend who has done some AI. Have you ever tried it or know anyone who has?

wwbirds
01-11-2014, 11:10 AM
I am no expert but if she had stopped ovulating I assumed it was too late to AI.
Ron talked to one vet yesterday who would do an AI on her but only after completing a ?? test (read $200 for test and $200 for AI).
It was not critical enough for me to want to force the issue to have her bred at this time especially since the puppy is coming so I would like time between the new arrival and the litter arrival since I will keep a female for myself and we have a waiting list for this breeding to Buddy and Marley. Breeding her next cycle in July is just fine with me.

What is the percentage of success with AI in dogs?

Does the percentage change from breed to breed?

Redfrog
01-11-2014, 12:31 PM
I don't know how the success rate is in dog. I do know some breeders who have used it as insurance of a breeding as well as with an uncooperative female, without problem and were successful.
It is used successfully in other animals and like anything else the more demand the better the procedure will become.

wwbirds
01-11-2014, 02:01 PM
Some of the US dog sites show 62-100 success with fresh sperm AI. Repeating procedure twice in 3 days often resulted in the higher results. A single AI often accounted for the lower 62% results
using previously frozen sperm for AI in dogs yielded only a 62% success as a ripe egg has to be present when AI is performed as frozen sperm is only alive for up to 5 hours where as fresh can linger for 24 or more hours waiting for a ripe egg.
No known comparisons to different breeds.

Beautiful puppy! I can't imagine my Golden, Rocky, ever being a hunting dog. He tips the scales at 115lbs, what a loaf.

wwbirds
01-11-2014, 04:07 PM
My males have all been working goldens and some as light as 55-65 pounds and very athletic so they looked even faster than they were really running. A really big golden like Rons "Buddy" is probably in the 75-85 pounds but solid muscle and retrieves big geese all day long. 115 pounds sounds St Bernard size?

Should have hooked up your bitch with Baxter, black long haired " dynamite retreivers " FS

I think they would take my life membership back at the CKC for a move like that to create a new breed of dynamite retrievers buddy!
I still have my own big black dynamite retriever (Ozzy) he is just beyond breeding age!!

Offered it to oldgutpile first as know he was looking but it is up for grabs after that as spoke to breeder this morning. We are flying my male in Wednesday afternoon. Field trial champions and National Field trial dogs on both sides of pedigree.

Sweet looking pup. If my youngest boy wasn't allergic to dogs, we would have a golden retriever. My lil sis had a NA champion show dog. She had 3 litters, some went on to be champion show dogs a few in trials as well.

IMO, most beautiful, gentle breed out there.:)

:sHa_shakeshout: Everything but the paperwork to look after. Mom was a fairly hard sell, but I think the breeders are happy it is going to a working/hunting home! 98% closed deal! (Confident enough I am scrambling to pick a name)

Done deal! Newest addition to my upland addiction is coming home.
My current old girl will have her nose out of joint for a bit, but she will adjust. she might even welcome the help on some of these big bird releases:sHa_shakeshout: Was out on another 60 bird release today, and the old girl was fighting through belly-deep snow for a lot of it. Sleeping pretty good right now!

Goldens are great dogs and the pics look like he will be a great hunting dog. Our friends have two goldens who are not hunting dogs and the male comes in at 130lbs. They are chunky goldens for sure but the male is also the largest bodied golden I have ever seen.
