Thread after thread of seeing Speckle55 pull out whitefish and hunt down them waskly wabbits we decided to check it out for ourselves. Applejax, JohnyD and I joined Speckle and his buds for our own weekend of Fins and Furs!
Well last Saturday the fishing was apparently slower then normal. We blamed the barometric pressure for comfort ;) but kept at it until the early afternoon . First half of the morning we were seeing fish swim past our baits and we’d all start chanting things like “ it’s a foot from the ice!” “3-pounder 3 feet down!” “soft jigs soft jigs, like a bug!” “AJ its heading towards you!”. Good ol’ Fisherman talk.
Amanda was first to hook up and land a 3 lb whitefish!

Next fish was half mine and half Aj’s since he stepped out for a washroom break and said “Amber, can you watch my rod for me”… Seconds later Johnny hollers that there’s a fish after his bait, it tried 4 times then headed to my bait, turned his head at it and went to AJ’s motionless hook and Wham! I hand lined his fish onto the ice.

Next we headed up the foothills with the 22’s for some rabbits. Between the 4 of us we spotted 3 rabbits in the last hour of daylight. It was challenging spotting the white fur against the white snow but we managed to spot a few beady eyes. AJ and John each got one and my last chance was short lived as my rabbit hopped into a thick bush of crisscrossing rabbit tracks… plus we were racing the sun.

Later that night David wanted to show us an Indoor Archery Range that him, his buddy Kevin and the rest of the Yellowhead Arrow Launcher Association built in Hinton with government funding to get more youth involved with archery. We were in awe admiring all the mounts and taxidermy of animals from all over the world. The range itself had an upper deck area to practice shooting from a tree stand angle. They built this youth center in 2009 and now have around 90 kids taking archery! Good job guys!

The next day we tried a different lake and each caught a few more whitefish.
I think my biggest was just over 2 and a half pounds, Aj took the fish for the smoker, and JohnnyD landed his first whitefish!
