I need a new electric motor. I have a 12' Mariner 4 and want something that will be good for it. I don't usually go out on large lakes nor when it's windy but would like to get something that will have some extra pep if necessary. I had been using an old Minkota 3 and it has finally died. Any advice or suggestion as to brand etc? Minkota seems to be the most popular

What is your budget?

How do you plan on using it? ie primarily trolling all day or just to get you to a spot?

Do you plan on using it in Salt water?

For sure get your self one with "pulse width modulation" (Minnkota calls PWM digital Maximizer). Will help your battery last longer when you're not at full throttle.

I have had both Minn Kota and motor guide and both are more than adequate. In my experience with the same boat I am able to acheive longer battery life with a motor guide than minn kota. Right now I am running a 55lb tiller style on a 16 ft jon boat. On the big boat I have had 3 minn kota bow mounts and just replaced it with a motor guide and the reults seem to be the same. just my experience. As I stated both will do the job it comes down to preference.

Will see who carries it in Edmonton. And best price. I usually go to South Common, Wholesale Sports but may have to open options a bit. Thanks so much again. Appreciate all opinions

just make sure you get a variable speed motor and one with a battery meter

I use the Mini-kota 55 variable speed with the battery meter and take 2 r28 batteries or bigger per day just incase but I fish Maligne Lake

I also have a Mariner 4(well it's on the way), I am getting the Endura Max 55 for it but can't decide on a size 27 AGM battery. Marine Batteries at canadiantire are rated really badly in the forums I have read. What are you using?

I have the endura max 55 and it works great. No issues and I think I paid $279 and got a $25 rebate at the sportsmen show last year.
