Peel off the label on a merc engine and it will say tohatsu... They are great engines for a lot less money.

Bro, before you buy it, check to ensure you can get parts. i had a late 70's 10hp which needed a new coil. Guess what, some models came over here from Japan and it was impossible to find certain parts. i searched extensively, as did my repair guy. I finally gave it up when I spoke with a fella in the States who asked if I had the 10hp blue-grey in color.Sure enough, no parts came over with certain models. BEL

Could it be that parts cant be found because its almost 40 years old? Or does that apply to modern outboards as well?

PP, the fella from the US said the parts were not shipped over. As I recall, when I looked at websites, some parts were available, but not the part I required. Maybe it is newer and parts are readily available. Just sayin he should check. I have a feelin the fella that sold me the boat knew the parts were not available because I had minor problems with it to start with. Got real bad, then could not even start it let alone run it at normal speed. Just sayin to be careful and check. BEL

Both Mercury and Nissan have contracted Tohatsu to produce their motors (particularly the smaller 40 hp and under models).

This Japanese company has been making high quality small engines for almost 100 years.

Although the Mercs and Tohatsu share the same block and most of the parts, there are some minor differences (fuel delivery system If i recall correctly) but I would be very confident in getting a pretty good outboard from these guys.

A friend of mine has run one for years and has had zero issues - and he has no clue how to take care of anything ........... lol.

I believe it was 30HP and under.

Tohatsu makes the motors for Nissan, Merc, Mariner and 15 hp and under for Evinrude. The motors are identical. The only difference is the Decal on the bonnet and the price...

For the record I have a 2013 Tohatsu 20hp 4 stroke tiller steer with electric start. I have zero complaints about it and would gladly purchase another one. It powers my 14 foot aluminum boat quite nicely and there are no issue going very quick with it.

I've put probably 50-60 hours on it last summer.. I do get out a lot in the summer. LOL
