After a long day of moving, we decided to have a family feast of take out. So for the first time, I tried the old Calgary institution of Chicken on the Way....oh, man was it ever amazing! Give it a try sometime...way better than Kentucky Fried Pigeon.

I first had it 55 years ago when they first opened. I always drop in when I'm in Calgary. As you say, a lot better than KFC. It is now in Red Deer.

I remember seeing their trucks on the road all the time. It was a real treat when the truck would arrive in front of the house as a kid.

I don't get it ... why doesn't that outfit have franchises all over N.A. by now?!

Seems like a hidden gem to me!

Those small independent places are always better than chains. :)

Bonus pack with gravy, side order of corn fritters. I'm glad I don't live nearby, been going there for 40 years.

I used to live a block and a half due west of the original location for 4 years, and never tried it until the week I was moving to my first house! It's good stuff for sure, they've opened a location across from the Mackenzie Towne Sobey's and a few others as well.

I had chkn on the way last nite too....mmm mmm good.

To answer your question.
The old man tried branching out many moons ago with a few different spots.
He found it too difficult to manage on his own so he sold em all except the 14th st one. He is still alive btw. This is a 3rd party story btw.
It is franchised and I would like to see more. Luckily I have one 3 blocks away.

First fast food I ever ate in Canada. Big event at our house. Dad, mom of course didn't drive, would drive the VW down to pick it up and I'd have to hold it on the way home.

I still remember the commercials for it. I wonder if they still have it in Edmonton. Mary browns is pretty good.

Yuppers chicken on the way rocks and KFC sucks in comparison not to mention it is way more expensive. There is a franchise about 10 minutes from my place and a treat myself once in a while.

Being totally famished at the end of moving day, I ordered 2 family packs (there's 5 of us just so you don't think I'm a total pig...ok, I'm still a pig). So, this morning, I get up and open the fridge and behold...

mmm, leftover Chicken on the Way...oh, yes! gonna be a great day.

Oh, I gotta mention the corn fritters - wow, they are good!

Haven't tried it...those places always look a little seedy...but saying it's better than KFC isn't saying much.

I remember when they first opened the Kensington location. Loved that stuff! Loved their fritters! We used to call them chicken balls:) Way better than Tim bits. Once every couple years when I have reason to go to that part of Calgary, I stop in.

We had a concrete pouring crew pouring two basement floors. At the finish of the pour they had a huge feast of chicken on the way. Those boys work hard so they put away the grub.

I noticed that they toned down their company 'logo' a while ago - must have been a little culturally insensitive. But they haven't toned down their deep-fried menu. Great stuff if you can handle it!

BTW - also a fan of those seedy-looking Burger-Barons you find in small-town Alberta !
