Very good pictures of a Downy woodpecker.

I can never tell Downy from Hairy woodpecker. I know.....Downy is smaller with shorter bill, but still hard to tell.
Until I saw this article with pics on the internet showing that the red patch on the male Hairy is split by the black line (as in your great pictures), while the male Downy has a solid patch of red across the back of the head.

Great photos

Wonderful pix.

I have a pail on a fencepost that the local rooster woodpecker likes to pound on every spring when he is checking out the local lady population.

I will bet I am not the only one that has that 4am alarm clock.

Thank you for the thread Flyguyd

I once stumbled upon a wood pecker nest. I stuck my finger in the hole to see if there was a baby in there. Baby tried to swallow my finger. I pee'd a little I think.

The parents were in near by trees looking at me, wondering what I was doing.

I stuck my finger in the hole two more times for fun and then left it alone.

The nest was in a medium sized freshly burnt pine tree, the nest/hole was only six feet from ground level. I could stand on my tippy-toes and see the little hungry hippo sitting at the bottom.

Nice pic's flyguyd!

The wife and I love bird's and have lots of feeders and suet's in the yard. The Downy and Hairy are regular visitors and every once in a while, the Pileated puts in an appearance. We actually had a couple nest in the area two years ago.

Downy:

Hairy:

Pileated:

For anybody who's interested, the following image shows the Hairy on the suet feeder and you can use it to compare the size of it to the Downy and the Pileated. NOTE: If you look at the bottom of the feeder, you can see his tail sticking out which tells you how big he is compared to the feeder itself:

Great shots guys. I can't tell you the number of times when that flicker's called when I been in the bush and It sounds so much like that of a cow elk. Dang things have fooled me and then the second call I can tell the diff.:sign0161:

Saw my first Flicker on Thursday at my feeder.
It is a small acrylic stick on window feeder normally just chickadees.
So I was bit startled as I was sitting in my living room with my back to the feeder. Saw motion and there was the Flicker about 2 feet from me.
Did not even know what it was til I searched the Net.
Maybe puffed because of winter but it looked huge

I always take some aspirins when I go hunting and leave a piece on the fence post for them. Lol
I'm sure they must suffer from headaches after all that pecking

The flicker just might be my favorite bird. Their call is unforgettable. They fill a ridiculous niche in nature with ants as their favorite food. The sight of their white rump patch as they are fleeing let's you know you are in a beautiful place... Usually. And their spots on their chest are crazy similar to a trout. Awesome bird.

I recall seeing a northern flicker for the first time. I had a hard time believing that a "woodpecker" was foraging in the middle of my lawn!

We have both Red-shafted and Yellow-shafted flickers here.

Young Pileated woodpeckers seem to leave their crowded nest holes before they're fully fledged. Unfortunately, that makes them very vulnerable to neighbourhood cats.

Shot a portrait of a red shafted flicker couple days ago. Almost comical.

Worst hunting partner ever! Was sitting in the woods yesterday (hunting) and had one of these guys nearby and he wouldn't go away. He stuck around the area for a solid hour - super annoying.

Beautiful bird, though!

Hairy woodpecker. Downy has a shorter bill relative to head size.

That's what I was thinking, but they fool me sometimes.

I have Both Downeys and Hairys visiting my feeders and we did see one Piliated in our yard. It showed up only once shortly after we moved here and it's never been back.

Flickers are another matter, they are here every summer and nest close to the house but I've never had them visit our feeders.

I've got lots of pictures but no time to look them up and post them.
