Well… after saving our pennies, and going into debt for the next two years or so, my wife and I booked a trip for some Caribbean diving. We headed down to Playa Del Carmen, not having been there since 1999. Wow, has the place changed.

I don’t necessarily think it changed for the better, but if you like all the amenities of home in the Caribbean (including starbucks) then I suppose the Mayan Riviera is the place for you. Don’t get me wrong, it is a beautiful place, but I liked the non-commercialized version I experienced years ago.

Our primary reason for going here was for the diving. Flights and hotel was reasonable, and we stayed right in Playa at the Gran Porto Real – the same place I stayed at nearly 15 years ago.

We did a total of 12 dives in 6 days. Including 2 cenote (cavern) dives at Dos Ojos. I dove there years ago, and again, it’s changed a lot, but it was nice to visit again and do some freshwater diving underground. It is a unique experience to be sure.

If you are diving in Playa, I HIGHLY recommend The Abyss Dive center. http://www.abyssdivecenter.com/ Dave runs a great operation, with long-term employees and boat captains. Having Dove with Dave and his dive master Steve, we were in for a great experience, and forged some new friendships with other fellow divers. This is NOT a cattle car operation. Rather, I think we had the best dive operator in town, with a small group on a great boat. Very safety conscious, very thorough, and focused on FUN! Even when the ocean didn’t cooperate one day, they made quick alternate arrangements, and off we went inland for cenote diving. The DM and the owner aren’t just people that know the area, they are trained instructors and have been diving in these waters for over a decade.

What I love about diving is that there is a whole other world underwater. So many things to experience, and see. And so very different than above water.

We purchased a GoPro Hero 3+ before we went down, and all these photos except for some above water are with this cam. We snagged some excellent video, and I’ll post an update with some videos at a later date. The underwater photos are from the gopro which takes a pic every 5 seconds in addition to taking HD quality video.

Anyhow, if you haven’t tried scuba diving, you’re missing out! Hope these pics make you feel a little warmer than our winter has been up here….

We took somewhere around 150 gigs of video, so will be working on compiling the dives down to some highlights. Will update the thread when we have some good video to share.

How did you work your decompression schedule from 100 feet?

There must have been a bit of shallow stuff in between.

Have you ever experimented with Nitrox?

Awesome pics, looks like a great trip!

Were the locals clearing out the lion fish at all? I've seen them spearing out as many of the large ones they could find, even on protected reefs. It's odd to see the fish instantly swerve away from them.

Damn fine trip report as always 'Diver. :)

Good to see someone I know put a GoPro through it's paces. Pics are stunning! Of course wading through the vids is a time consuming gig that's easy to procrastinate about. Trust me.........

All hail the King. Good to have ya back bud. :)

I've dove with nitrox a handful of times while on a course. It just extends your bottom time, but not neccesarily allow you to go deeper. I'm not nitrox certified though.

For time underwater, I was trained using dive tables to plan your dives. As a rule, the deeper you go, the less time you have underwater. Nowadays we use dive computers that monitor your depth and adjust your bottom time accordingly. It monitors your ascent rate and allows you to do multilevel diving to extend your time under.

Another general rule is you typically dive your deepest dive at the start of the day. After a surface interval to off-gas nitrogen out of your blood stream you can go back down again, but supposed to be shallower. Again, the dive computer monitors the interval time and any residual nitrogen in your bloodstream.

We usually do a safety stop at the end of the dive. hover at 15 feet for three minutes. This isn't required, but a good thing to do anyhow. For recreational diving, we dive 'no decompression limits', which means at any time, we should be able to make our way to the surface and not have to do a safety stop or decompression stop. Soon as you get into deco stops, you're into technical diving.

Awesome pics, looks like a great trip!

Yep - they're spearfishing them quite actively I understand.

Some people can have real issues with thier sinuses. Fortunately, I've never had a problem.

Some people can have real issues with thier sinuses. Fortunately, I've never had a problem.

That's one of the reason's I hesitate to try diving. Have a deviated septum from breaking my nose as a kid playing sports. Had surgery on it later on but they never fixed it so I can't breathe through my nose. Farking mouth breathers :sHa_shakeshout:

Again, great pics and looking forward to the video whenever you get around to it :)

Kinda hard to reduce down to a short vid, but I didn't film much in the really dark areas.

My wife and I just returned from Belize for a diving/Fly Fishing vacay. We actually met the Biologist heading up the eradication study on the Lion Fish. They are out competing the lobster and conch ( main fishing industries in Belize) so are trying to develop an alternative Industry for Lion Fish, as well. They are AWESOME to eat so if you have the chance try some! Yum!!

Yeah - On my dive operator's facebook page is a neat string of lionfish they caught.

As neat as they are to see underwater, they're a real problem down there. I was going to try eating one, one day but didn't get a chance. I'd go back down to try my hand at spearfishing. Never did that before while diving.

Everyone I talked to said that they taste great!

Well, finally had time to go through a pile of video footage.

I made this second compilation of our ocean dives. I'm not the best cameraman that's for sure, but keeping in mind that professional rigs costs thousands of dollars, I'm very happy with my Go Pro!

Tell me about Moray eels. The son and I had an encounter with one in Cuba last year. It swam at our feet about 6-12" away and wouldn't leave us alone.
