The Chicken on the way thread had me remembering old tv and radio commercials.

So does anyone remember the jingle "4265050 if your hungry call the Lido, free delivery"? And then any conversation about Chinese food restaurants needs to have a story or two about calling to see if they sell cat, or if they buy cat.

Heh! Definitely remember that. We used to order Lydo every couple of months, usually when we had visitors from out of town.

Neighbours often ordered Chicken-on-the way - can still remember seeing the truck parked on the street outside.

That truck used to roll by at two in morning when I was at saftey meetings in my freind's garage. Some nice greasy chicken and chips sure topped things off.

Just what are you eating over there these days?

I remember calling the Lido... but only ever after midnight, and under the influence. One could NOT get that food down during daylight hours, sober. LIDO was in the same food group as 7-11 Hoagies... MUNCHIES.

Funny, funny. They do have KFC. Kabul Fried Chicken. It's not too bad, once you forget what the chickens look like. We used to live on "Butcher Street" which was a street filled with butcher shops. And they are all hung out on the street and covered in flies and dust and crap.

But in reality, we stopped going out a few weeks ago when the Lebanese restaurant was attacked. In fact most of the restaurants that served expats have closed up shop, and our security protocols have banned us from any travel outside the compound other than needed for work. Security and safety has changed drastically. Things are in a spiral dive into the toilet.

We did buy a pot and a propane burner, and have been making poutine, and it is pretty good.

Hah, that brings back memories.

As kids we thought it was hilarious to call 426-5050 and ask them stupid questions.

'Hello, this is the Lydo'

'Hi, do you have free delivery?'

'Yes, on orders over $5'

'Ok thanks, bye'

Can you sing it for us?
I remember the GSL Chev City one though...
I won't sing it.
" Nobody but nobody can give you a car for less... than GSL Chev city... nobody"

Oh lordie that would be an epic derail but to keep us on track.....

Back in the day it was illegal for bars to be open Sundays without people eating, so to get around it we would have a Lydo buffet set up in the quiet area of Rock City, thing is food wasn't prepared there, Lydo would deliver it in white buckets and just keep it warm on the steam table...everyone who came in was charged for a buffet whether they ate it or not...I think it was $5 all you could eat
To this day I have an affinity for sweet and sour ribs with red dye #5 :scared0018:

Ahhh, the Lido. I remember being a U of A student and calling an order in and they said the order would be $5 less if I picked it up. I said what the heck, so my buddy and I jumped in the car (gas was much cheaper then). Well, the Lido had to be in one of the seediest sections of Edmonton I had ever been in at that time of night. (97th street.) They had me pay and receive the food through a sliding door through plexiglass :)

That was the last time I called the Lido :)

I'm betting you drove over "un-sober". ;) nobody who's not drunk or high ever ordered Lido.

This is a great thread. My cousin was the lady in the commercials eating the food. She hated that they played those commercials for so many years.

I will never forget that phone number.
When I was about 18 I was up late at night and around 1:00 am all the channels went out or to infomercials.

If I recall correctly I was watching the french channel (12 back then) to see some nudity (half a boob and a guys ass).
The station went to commercials and they played the Lydo commercial over and over again for at least two hours.
It drove me insane but I could not switch the channel!
Everytime it ended I hoped the french pseudo porn would start again but then came the all too familiar "doot doot do do doot 426 50 50 if your hungry call the Lydo.... FREE delivery!"

Last time I was at rock city was around 88. I had a hooker come into the mens bathroom and offer me a bj for $20. there was also a guy in the corner of the bar peeing.

It may have caught fire at some point but the original building is still there and is now a dinner theater type place.

That was right around the time when "Nobody makes the pizza like Guiseppe's pizza shop" commercials were out. That was a popular pizza spot with the university crowd in the early 70's

Ha! ha! Neither actually. Just a starving university student who realized that night that if something seems to good to be true (read: cheap), it probably is! :)
