My little nephew has spina cephalis and we (family and friends) are doing a fundraiser type thing to provide him with a wheelchair. We need to collect 1 million tabs. So far we have about 250,000 of them. Please save and collect as many tabs as you can. Even if you only gather 15 tabs, each one counts. You can send me a PM if you are willing to collect and we will figure out a way to get them to where they need to go. I only found out about the tabraiser lastnight so I dont have all the details. Im still waiting for the email giving me all the details. I will post up later today or this evening when I get all the details :)

Just to help clarify for our other AO members.

Do beer can tabs also count?

First I'm sorry to hear about the little boy's disability. Secondly, this thing has been around for may years, and when the people collecting have a large number of tabs, they can't find any one who will trade them for a wheel chair.

I'd be happy to donate the whole can.

BTW the Canadian Legion often has a number of these from Vets who no longer need them, but they would be designed for an adult.

From what im told The million tabs get traded in to the wheelchair place, then they send the chair out. The tabs cover the cost of the chair. I just became aware of this whole chair thing last night. I will post info as I get it.

1 million tabs can translate into $450....roughly.

There are much better more efficient ways to raise funds for a good cause. Hell, even a bake sale or a bottle drive would work 10 times better!

Grey and Blackwolf, please by all means help any way you want to. I was asked to see what I could do to collect and gather popcan tabs. Going towards helping a family member. I gladly shook my head "said yes ill see what I can do". So here I am seeing what I can do.

We don't drink that much from cans and I don't drink a whole lot of beer lol but would like to help. Can I mail you a donation that can go towards the chair. Be nice to help this little tyke out. I know I would do anything to help out my nephew. If your comfortable with this, PM me your mailing address.

How much does the wheel chair cost?? I'd gladly shoot you a donation of $$ instead of a tab :)
I just gave away my shower/bath tub chair, looking to give away my 3 walkers :)

ONE MILLION tabs ? There's got to be a better way.

pm incoming.

and looking at the inefficiencies of this, would asking people to roll pennies, or even a bottle drive not be much more rewarding?

I'm guessing the chair costs thousands, 1,000,000 pop tabs is only going to pay a fraction of the cost.

I have never heard of the tab thing before until the other day. And yea there is better ways I did some looking at the poptab thing and its not very effecient, but every little bit helps.

So I found out late last night that they actually have an account set up with TD bank for the lil guy. Still no cost on the chair, but they will be find out on tuesday.
Again folks the support is absolutely amazing. And theres really no words to say how thankful I am and how thankful they are. Having a child with a bad case of spina cephalis is tough for a young family to deal with, but the support of complete strangers is going to make the current and future battles they will deal with a little easier.

If and when I can come up with a better word to thank all those how have offered to help ill let you know. For now all I can say is THANK YOU!!! The world needs more people like you, Thank you.

BINGO ^ !

There's lots of charitable organizations that are more than happy to provide a wheelchair to someone in need ... many of them exist for just that purpose. All one has to do to start the process, is make a request.

The info is being passed along. If it where for myself it would be easier to figure out what has been done, or what channels have been gone through. Unfortunatly I am far away from them and can only get so much info from texts, emails and phonecalls

I take it your nephew doesn't live in Canada, cus if he did wheelchairs are usually covered under provincial healthcare systems. Heres the Alberta example - http://www.health.alberta.ca/services/AADL-benefits.html

What country does he live in?

This tab thing is really old and has been around a long time. My Father, RIP was instrumental in the Edmonton area as a central point for gathering the tabs from the Fire Halls and schools and Lions , etc. When he had a 1/2 ton truck full he would go to Calgary with them and give them to a fella with the IOOF Oddfellows Lodge and that fella would arrange to send them back east on a deadheaded semi and the Lodge down there would sell them for the scrap metal value and then donate that money $ to buy wheelchairs for the needy. Sure, there are better ways to fund raise but this is pretty simple in that most people take the tab off anyhow and THROW THEM AWAY. So why not use them. I still pull them any chance I get. As a matter of fact. I got a whole pocketful from Conference last weekend up in Fort McMurray. From what I understand is that the tab is a better aluminum than the can. You can still get the refund from the can after (Except in B.C. I believe) And artistically speaking, there was a fella out Onoway Way that was making full size objects (Tractor, deer, etc) out of the pop tabs as well.

Any ways....Kayden was born with hydrocephalus and is partially blind. He was born on Aug 20 2011. He doesn't walk or talk yet. We were told that he is going to need a wheelchair. A family friend said she wanted to collect tabs to get a wheelchair donated to him. One million tabs to get a wheelchair donated. She will be organizing, counting and collecting the tabs. She is calling it tabs for Kayden. Now Kaydens physio therapist said that his wheelchair might be fully covered or partially covered by aids to daily living. If it is we will still collect the tabs and donating them to the Ronald Mcdonalds house in Kaydens name. Other people have been reaching out and wanting to help out in other ways. We have started a account for Kayden at TD. We don't know what else he may need in his future or when he's an adult so any money we save will be going to that and making sure he has what he needs to live a happy life. Thank you to anyone who wants to help. It is greatly appreciated.

This is the Message I got from Jodi! I was also given a couple pics she would like to share so the very kind folks of AO can see the face the help is going to!http://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/hh633/winger7mm/1624108_10151881036836150_1695463531_n_zps816f582f .jpg (http://s1255.photobucket.com/user/winger7mm/media/1624108_10151881036836150_1695463531_n_zps816f582f .jpg.html)

As an update, so far I have brought home about 20,000 tabs!!

The genuine folks of AO are very awesome people, those of you who have negative things to say (I wont name them, but you know who you are) its very disheartening hearing the things you have to say. I know you dont know me from adam, or the family. But come on, if you had a member of your family with such a thing that had life long problems and SEVERE disabilities, you would hope for the kindness of others as well as best wishes. Your a class act and deserve a pat on the back........ :thinking-006:

We were just into the Strathcona Legion on 51 Ave in Edmonton yesterday and they have a container out front for the collection of Pop Tabs. To go into a Bottle Depot is labor intensive. The idea of this is that when you pull them off your Beer Can, instead of flicking them a way, you put them in your pocket. No extra effort required.
