I had lost my hunting season to a job I had to attend south of Grande Prairie and was failrly depressed about the whole thing as I had a Bull Moose tag for 353 and my hunting partners went there without ma and shot a two year old bull around the 46 km mark of the Simonette road. I left Grand Prairie at 2 Pm and headed down to Grand Cache on the way to Edmonton and thought what the heck I have to give it a try and turned up the Forestry trunk road that borders the west side of 353. I was at the 40 km mark and kept turning east onto any lease road that I came across in hopes of seeing something. I ran into a nice young Grizzly on one road and watched him for a minute or two and then saw a cow and calf about 20 minutes later. About 5:30 I was losing hope and turned up a lease road that split two ways to two different wells and went to the end and turned around. When I came back by the Y in the road there was a bull and a cow standing on the edge of a clearing about 60 yards east of the road. I drove past the clearing and bailed out and fumbled a mag into the .338 and ran up to the tree line and slowly walked back until I could see up th eclearing edge and they were still standing there. I lined up and put a 250 grain Nosler Partition through the heart area of the bull and he began running along the tree line quartering towards me. I couldnt take a second shot as the cow was running in between us and the bull finally stumbled and came clear behind her and I hit him again and he started crow hopping as he crossed the lease road and fell on the west side of the road. He was much bigger than I first thought and decided to phone some fellows that I was working with in Grande Prairie for a little help and the promise of steaks, sausage and a future case of the best Canadian Whiskey.
I had the hide off of one side and the two quarters off by the time they arrived but this would have been one long, long night without them. We had the animal in the truck by 10:30 pm and I drove the rest of the way to Stony Plain that night. This was a very short very fortunate hunt and I thank the boys again for coming to my aid.
For the gentlemen in earlier threads looking for bulls in 353, I only saw 3 or 4 other vehicles in 3 hours on the west end and the conditions were fairly dry.
I wish you the best of luck and if you are not succsessful then let me know as I will be glad to share.
