hi guys. i'm thinking about picking up an older ruger 77v in 25-06. my question is, who uses the 25-06 , what do you use it for , and how do you like it. if i do get this it will definately be the smallest calibre in my safe. i don't really want to hear which calibre is better, just the 25-06 please.

Here is a smidge of critters I've taken with my 25'06.
Never used bullets heavier than 100gr. BTW.

I've also taken 4 cow moose with mt 25'06, and more coyotes than I care to even remember.

Before you purchase this used 25'06 your looking at, have a borescope run through it, afterall it is an overbore cartridge, and often mis use will burn the throat out.

I have used the 25 06 for years. The ammo used has been all handloads.
Bullets used have ben Hornady 117 grain btsp,Nosler 115 Partition,100 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip,and the 87 Grain Hornady.

With the exception of the 87,100 grain bullets listed I have been happy with the results. The 87 grain bullet never did group in My rifle, and the 100 g bt was way to fragile and destroys way to much tissue, plus on some less than broad side shots it may not penetrate into the vitals.

With the 117 Horn and 115 Nosler partition I have taken moose as well as numerous deer. On deer sized animals I have got complete penetration out to close to 400 yards on broadside shots.

I have found Reloader 22,and IMR 4831 is what my firearm prefers you of course will have to play with yours to find out what it likes.

Hope this helps,if you have any others questions pm me

dick284, wow, that is a very nice bunch of critters you have there. and this is exactly what i wanted to hear. i don't see much about the 25-06 but i think it is more popular than most think. by the look of it it will be more than enough for barrenland cariboo. it may not be a first choice for moose but it seems to work for you guys.
ian, thanks for your input too. i think i'll go over to my buddy and pick it up.

Barrenland Bous no problem, they are put together like a Swiss watch inside, so it does'nt take a lot of rifle or bullet to put em in the bag.

As for moose well from what I've seen they would sooner lay down than run off when shot, but I know on that one I'll get made a liar on my next rubber nose.

Enjoy

I use a Browning A-bolt in 25.06. Best deer, antelope, and wolf rifle available. Nosler partitions 115 grain are the best trouble.

I was thinking of getting a 25 06 for my fiancee next year. How are they for kick? Would they be sufficient for a smaller frame person (women and kids). She is fine with the .243 that she has shot. It seems as though they way outperform the .243 in all respects and I wanted other opinions before making my decision.

thanks,

The 25'06 is a great choice for samll framed shooters, it just appears the manufacurers have'nt realized it yet. From what I can research, there are no youth or lady model 25'06 on the market. You will have to get the rifle fitted for your fiancee, but balance may be an issue with the 25's desire to have long barrels to get published velocities.

Got one in a ruger m77 target, hogue stock, timney trigger, elite 3200 3-9x40, by far the most accurate rifle I have owned. I've shot coyoes and deer with it and would not hesitate for moose or elk. 117 grain federal is what I use.

I bought a Tikka T-3 in 25-06 and can tell you this,I have a Sims recoil pad and it still kicks plenty for a 12 year old boy.It does shoot mind you,but I find you really have to bear down on it to shoot accurately,I shoot 110 Accubonds shooting about 3078fps,on good days it will shoot.3's and steel plate at 600yrds

I've had my Ruger 77V .25-06 for thirty years. I've killed a whole bunch of Northern Missouri deer and some Wyoming antelope with it. By far, I prefer shooting 117 or 120 Nosler Partition bullets in it. About 52 gr 4350. Federal Premiums were loaded with them. I shot a dandy 15 pointer last Sunday, running at me, dropped him in his tracks. I have a 77 Mark I in .257 Roberts. With +P ammo, it's basically the same. I have a Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20 scope on it, with Ruger extra high rings, and works fine. Had a tasco 6-18 on it for years.

My 12-year old used my Ruger 77 Mark I .257 Roberts this season, killed one. Handled it fine. The 77V is just too heavy for him (and probably most people) but I love it.

Mulecrazy,

I bought a Browning medallion in 25-06 for my wife last spring. I was not sure how it was for recoil, I tried it first and I could not belive how little recoil it has. My wife is very small framed at about 5'3" and she absolutely loves to shoot it. The rifle does have the boss end with the brake but when the brake is off I cannot tell the difference(other than the noise). Very accurate, very nice rifle. And for their size wow do the work!

3 wt bucks, 9 coyotes, 1 wolf. i first used 120 corelokts killed 2 deer with them and most the coyotes and the wolf. Then i got to reloading and i know shoot 120 hornady hollow points killed the last deer (only ran 50 yards) and 75 v-max for yotes and wolves, they don't exit on yotes, well at least the last two i have shot with them

A friend retired his .303 and is now using a 25-06, he loves it.

The first deer he took with it last year actually flipped over when he shot it.
Turns out he was too close for the ammo he was using.
