I have had my daughter out shooting a savage 99 308. I loaded it down a bit but she finds the recoil bothers her.

Has anyone got any loading info for reduced loads so I can give that a try. Will load 150 grain bullets as we hunt mostly deer. If this doesn't work I might try a 30-30 bolt action, if I'm able to scrounge one up.

If you take a starting load of IMR 3031, and a 150gr. bullet, you get darn near 30/30 velocities.

there is your youth load right there.

I just went through this for my 12 year old boy. He is also shooting a 308 in a model 99 and complained about the recoil. What I did was add a Limbsaver recoil pad and then worked up a load of 125gr. Speer with 42gr. IMR3031 shoots good groups and my son says there isnt much kick. I tried to load the 150gr. bullets but found with a reduced load it was backing the primers out and didnt shoot good groups, so I sped the lighter bullets up a bit and all was well.

What about maintaining the superb load but adding a muzzlebrake?
