I hear from some that numbers in the area seem to be down to historical lows, and others say there are so many they are becoming a pest. Anyone from the area care to comment are what their thoughts are?

Still quite a few birds. They have really spread out over the last few years ,which maybe makes it seem like there are hardly any left in the porkies. They do flock together in the winter and could be considered a pest i guess. I honestly dont think Alberta will ever have a large enough population to truly become a problem . Not enough water , too cold, and to much snow

places down east get alot of lake effect snow(more than here) and as cold and still have high turkey populations.

people with trees that hold fruit/berrys,crab apples, etc. through out the winter around here can't stand the turkeys as they damage the trees. around the porkys, in the pass, and all the way to waterton.

they are doing very well! if there not raiding the trees, there at almost every cattle operation, during the winter.

it would seem to me, that they could let out a 1000 tags. even if 750 gobblers where harvested(which would be a high percentage). they've already breed all hens by the beginning of may. it wouldn't affect the population.

hopefully they'll allow more tags someday soon.

I was in 305 and 308 in January and there sure seemed to be a lot of birds around, but I have no idea what the numbers are / should be.
