I have a few questions folks.

Generally. ....what do you do with your harvested hides?

Specically..... I'm getting into leather crafting and am wondering if any of you sell tanned hides or know anyone who does? Currently I buy from Tandy Leather.

Is there a place to give or sell your harvested hides so that they can be used for leather crafting?

So again. .....where do your personally harvested animal hides end up?

I generally get rid of my hides with the carcass. If I'm not mistaken, selling them would be illegal.

If illegal to sell for profit......then what about donating the hide to someone so it can be used for something?
I'll bet a lot of good hides go to waste.......that's a shame.

You can give the hide to someone. I'm sure that if you asked during hunting season people wouldn't mind giving them to you if they are just going to dispose of them anyway. I've tanned a hair on whitetail and it turned out excellent.

If you pick them up, next season you can have all of our hunting partys hides. My aunt use to make us slippers and gloves but is to old now.

It is legal to sell the raw hides of ungulates.

Personally, I give some away to those who will use them, others I make rawhide or tan them hair-on for my own use.

There was a hide donation program in place with AFGA. Not sure if it is still running.

I've sent a few deer & moose hides to Halford in Edmonton for tanning, and keep a stock of tanned hides around for hobbies & projects. It's not cheap and takes a little while to get them back - but it gives extra satisfaction to work with them rather than 'store-bought' at Tandy's.

I'll have to learn about tanning.
That would be extra extra satisfaction. :)

Out here the Native groups usually have some ladies that will take them with the head as they use the brains in the tanning process..one lady took all of ours last year

Also Local Trappers will use as bait

also I had a friend lady(native Ontario) that took my hides /horns/tail feathers and wings of all my grouse for 15 years she took them to Edmonton and got tanned then use for making moccasins and shields and crafts

after years of friendships she took my measurements and made me this as a present ..Deer horn buttons and neck lace with my bear claws and a Wolf tooth that I took Alberta with in 2000 AFGA... Wow was all I could say and a big hug and Thank-you Faith

so if you can ask around you area

Food for Thought

David:)

ps .. I wore this at the Sportsman Show in Edmonton on Friday this year

The AFGA Hide Collection program ended a couple of years ago , because it was uneconomical to continue. I was a hide collection depot for over 20 years.
