View Full Version : A/O and Great Pacific Salmon Lodge Fishing derby.

With the fantastic response to our 2nd annual A/O Salmon fishing trip to Great Pacific Salmon Lodge, we have decided to start a Salmon Derby.

At present we have 9 individuals commited to this. In order to make this derby a complete success, we need another 2 anglers to fill out the 3rd Boat.

Grand Prize.
A free trip and entry into the 2015 3rd annual Great Pacific and A/O members derby.

I am planning on this being a full blown set up with additional prizes and a cash pot for those interested.

My proposed set up will be a entry fee into the cash pot of $100. That will give us a $1,100 pool to play with. We could even do more and make it that much more interesting.

As well, I will be hitting up my suppliers to have some added prizes or cash to put into the pool.

Trophys will be awarded in the categories.
A complete set of rules will be wrote up by myself and posted soon.
As well, I am sure we will have a few more surprises and treats organized by June.

However to make this work, we need a complete sell out of all 11 spots.

As of right now, we are at 9. But I hear that #10 is on the verge of comiting.

The only way to guareente entrance is to put a deposit down.

This is going to be a fantastic 4 day trip. Not often do you get to share a trip of this magnitude with other like minded guys. Singles are more than welcome. Get your spot today!

Cost is $2,900 for 4 days +$100 for the 100% pool.(optional)

Thanks
Jamie

I like the optional $100 contest, 1 in 11 chance of winning! Nice!

Incredibe offer by the way, thank you so much for that!

For the fish derby, I have a couple ideas. :)

So we don't get into a panic to get just the biggest salmon, why not throw a little twist into it, something like the closest x fish to x pounds on day x.

Then everyone will want to catch as many species as possible, I know that at least 3 of us on Shay's boat want to catch as many different fish as we can, we of course want to catch salmon but not just Chinooks.

If it was closest to 3lb rock cod on day 2 Rubbadub would have won!

Even a door prize works, but however we set it up it will be a great time!

Or a grand total of pounds at the end of the trip. Which ever way I'm in. Looking forward to it for sure.
Almost thinking of heading out tomorrow to get some practice in. Maybe put my Kodiak in the dugout and tie fishing line to the dog.

I have 3 in the wings begging permission from their wives, first 2 to pull the trigger win!

How can a guy lose? Great deal already, if we have decent luck we will 'only' bring home a couple HUNDRED pounds of salmon and halibut and ling and snapper each,

there is a chance to win $1100 in the derby,

AND

SOMEONE is going to win a free trip next year!!!

you really bring home 200 lbs of each type of fish? each person?

A forum member went last June and bought back close to 250 lbs

Last time we went I only kept 2 species of fish and my cooler was way over 100 lbs in 3 days. This time with 4 days and a month later (better) in the season we have been told to bring much bigger coolers. We caught halibut and chinook, this time are targeting chinook, coho, halibut, snapper, ling cod, rock cod....

Orca, humpbacks, octopus, shark, prawn, crab, ........

If any of you guys have enough moxie to try fly fishing on the way (cough Bob cough) I am taking a portable printer and laptop plus my fly gear. We are going to hit ferry island for 1, just outside Terrace, where it is supposed to be just amazing fishing.

When I am done fishing, if anyone else wants to use my printer on a trip like this, just ask and it is yours.

2 days and we are west bound!

put me down for 6 broken tippets, 3 snags, 1 slip and fall (slippery rocks, not drinks) 8 or more curse words, and of course 1 fish story.

I'd like to get in the fly fishing pool but knowing nothing about fly fishing i'll just say GOOD LUCK KEN. I have faith that there will be some cussing, tangled line and a fish story.

Ok, so its 6 am here (7 Ab time). I've been awake about an hour and Sleeping Beauty and Sleeping Ugly (they cwn fight over who is who) are both still hunkered down for their long winters nap. I'm thinking with my years of military training, I could pack my gear and go for breakfast quietly without waking them. :) Now this would be funny, as I'm driving, and we stayed overnight at some cabin in the woods. Leaving them to fend for themselves in the thriving metropolis of Mcbride bc would be pretty funny.

As funny as I would find that, I think an extremely loud bowel movement might just wake them and properly motivate...INCOMING!!!!!

My Best buddy Robb won the derby; $800 on a 34LB Spring!

There were 3 TYEE springs, 2 repeats from last year and Tundra Monkey was added this year!

All in all a great time, the guys put on a great show, food, lodging, everything was just excellent.

It was great seeing the band back together, and very nice meeting Elkoholic, Norwestalta and Lone Wolf.

Threepeat next year?

Unfortunately, the largest was long lined released.
A very very conservative guess was 45 pounds.....

That hurts.

But the best story's come from the fish a person losses.
Next time we get him!

I can't speak for anyone else, but after taking 8 days off I am working double time to catch up. My job has me running hard daily, sorry about disappointing the membership here. The little spare time I had went into helping Jaxsons family.

We caught lots of fish, but because this was my 2nd trip I didn't take a lot of pictures. I was there to fish and spend time with my friends, both were accomplished in spades. We went fishing at 04:30, went to bed at 11:00 pm and repeated 4 times. It was awesome.

I caught my first coho and several afterwards, my first quillback, several rock cod, lost a monster that cartwheeled twice, ate 2 crabs, baked potato, 1 huge steak, some lox, awesome halibut bites and salmon, drank apple pie moonshine, and half a can of budlight yargh.

Anyone that has not gone to GPSL needs to get out there. If there are a day or 5 open book it and go.

How many, how big, what kind? No one who went put up stats? I was wondering how big the biggest halibut was from the Rupert area after seeing pics of Serengetti's?(spelling?). No dock pictures with all the fish from a day like that?

Your not going to see monster Hali pics out of our Lodge.
We have them, but we don't target what we can't keep.
Perhaps in years to come the Gov will allow us back to unlimited weight.

2014 lodge record on a released Hali is 107 pounds.
2014 lodge record on a kept Hali is 71.

Thanks

It was a good time. I kept 3 spring, 3 coho and 2 halibut. None were monsters but they'll still make a turd. I'm unsure but I think my liver departed day 2.
Met some really good people and look forward to possibly doing it again.

4 Spring (no monsters), 1 Coho and 2 Halibut.

With Shea kicking our butts out of bed to be on the dock at 0430 hrs, I didn't spend as much time on the deck as I would have liked, but still had a blast. Met some great guys, and rekindled some old friendships!

I will mirror Ken's comments above about photos. I think I spent more time catching up than I did thinking about pics! How bad is that?!?!

Big thanks to whatever drug company makes gravol and those ear patches. If it wasn't for you, I would have spent more than one afternoon lying on the floor of the lodge trying to keep myself from falling off the Earth :)

Lol, the late nights early mornings combined with fresh air usually make for some bobble heads!!
I have had those days when you just forget about pictures but I usually regret it.
Next Time I do I plan to have a couple Drift HD's mounted on the boat and to get some great photos as my last two trips the few photos that I did take were poor quality.

Had a great time meeting some new friends. The tides were quite large so fishing had not picked up as it should have, but we were still getting into them just not the size and quantity of that time of year. Unfortunately the last 2 days it blew up 35-45knotts so made for a bit of a hard days fishing. Myself, I kept a 9, 13, 20lb springs, a 38lb Lingcod and a 15lb halibut. We had the best action on day 2 and released a fair amount of 8-12lb springs and were able to get into 4 coho. Day 1 was slow fishing with a nice run to top end of Dundas Island, got a couple small springs to the boat (12lb and less) then picked up and ran to fish for halibut. Got onto a hot spot for 15lb+/- chickens but was hoping to fill my large slot 1st. We released a ton of fish with our boat keeping 3. That evening brought some good times and a few drinks were had. Next morning 4:30 am we were on the water headed south to fish another area. This was to be our best day fishing with blue skies, calm water and catching quite a few fish. Our boat managed quite a haul with 5 or 6 springs and 4 coho, we picked up and ran to the outside for slack tide and get into halibut. Once the halibut came in we did well and released quite a few less than 15lbs and managed to keep 4 between 15-20lbs. I managed to hook into a bucket mouth ling cod weighing in at 38lbs. The next 2 days the weather blew up and was raining with wind up to 45 knots. We fished hard and were able to get into some fish but had to work hard at it. Each night saw us coming back to the lodge around 6pm and the we all ate, drank and had good laughs. Jamie's crew are a great bunch and do they ever work hard at getting you on to fish, 14hr days on the water every day to try and gett us our limits of big fish. Over all there were a few tyee caught, a few in the 20lb range and a bunch of teens. A few coho were found and halibut in the 15-20lb range. The biggest factor I think for the halibut was limited time to fish them as the tides were big and it was best to anchor before slack tide and fish through for a couple/few hours until the tide was ripping again. Again, it was great meeting everyone and am looking forward to an annual trip.

Cheers, Elk.

I told mine I was going to do a whirlwind tour of all the "Ballet" clubs in BC and Western AB. Then I was going on a whiskey tasting bender that may last a few days, at which time I was going to the nearest tattoo parlour and get a giant Chewbacca inked onto my back with her mother's name under it.

She was relieved when I told her I was joking, and then she was surprisingly receptive to a little fishing trip :)
