i may have the chance in the future to go deer hunting in Alberta with my soon to be brother in law, i live in Newfoundland now so my rifles are all geared towards moose hunting and bear hunting. so my question is out of my rifles which one would be the best, i have a 300wsm, a 45-70, and a 50 call muzzle loader, i also have a 12 gauge with a fully rifled slug barrel, please dont suggest for me to buy a new rifle, thanks for your input and all the info.

300 wsm will work fine.

All of your rifles are going to work. The 300 wsm is the most versatile but I would use the one you like.

Nope not at all, no such thing as too much gun!
Shoot them in the lungs and not in the shoulder and things die , very little lost meat due to bloodshot!:)
They don't take a lot to kill them, but a bad shot is just that, a bad shot!
I've killed them with danged near everything except a belted magnum, but have seen lots killed with the 300's and the big 7 magnums.

All of the above will work just fine but I would say bring either your 45-70 or your 300wsm.

None of those caliber will work in alberta. Better stay on the rock.

A couple years ago I shot a deer that weight in at around 350 pounds. No such thing as to much gun.

No question, 300 WSM 150-180 gr. My Short Mags love Silver Box Winchester even over the so called high end ammo but all guns are individuals use what works in yours best. Depending on where you are hunting you may have to reach out a "bit" the 45-70 drops about 12 feet at 500 yds. I have shot Island Blacktail(basicly big dogs lol) with a 325 WSM 180 gr and it dies just fine with very little meat loss. Don't worry about your 300 being to much gun for a big Alta buck.

My hunting partners roll with .270s, and claim my .300wm is too much. However, when dressing animals you'd be hard pressed to know which cartridge was used. I think the .300wsm will be fine.

All Round - .300 WSM for grain fields/open country, or bush.

If you are only hunting forests with/without cut lines, I now only take my 45-70 with the LEVERevolution Hornady 325gr ammunition. I have a Cabela's matched scope for the ammunition and have taken two deer in the bush with this set up.

Get a better idea of where you will be hunting and the probable terrain features.

You could be hunting wide-open territory in which case the 300 WSM would be perfect on the other hand if you are hunting brush the 300 WSM would likely be too much.

Given the mix of terrain we have out here I would bring both the 300 WSM and your 45-70, you will be prepared for whatever terrain you encounter.

I have been using the 300 WSM for a number of years now and have shot deer ranging from 50 yards all the way out to past the 300 mark with no problems or issues at all. The closer the animal the more care you want to take with your shot placement and the bullets you are using. I have been shooting Nosler Partitions pretty well exclusively and have had no problems with that bullet but pay far closer attention to making sure I don't hit shoulders at closer range.

At the end of the day, bring whatever you want and have fun!

My brother & I use to like hunting deer with our smooth bore 12ga shotguns. However like others have said anything you mentioned in your list will work.

Any gun will work. I just think if you take a deer with the old 45/70 then it would be an awesome story and pic.:)

Where are ya going and do you need any help?

Couple friends use the .300 never a problem. I would bring both the .300 and 45-70. Just because.

Without a doubt the muzzle loader is the way to go!!!

300 WSM will do the job just fine, my old man refuses to use anything but that caliber for all his big game hunting.

NOPE. If you are a 1-rifle guy, the 300WSM with 180gr bullets and you are set for all big game in Alberta. Back when I was a"1 rifle guy", my Sako m75ss 300WM was it.

Now if you want an excuse to buy a new rifle, I like the 270WSM.

Dont fly across Canada with a muzzle loader or 45-70 in your case

Bring the WSM. You have the bases covered with it.

Long ride home thinking about the 190" at 300 yds and you standing there with a smokepole.......

Use the WSM, and don't go with light weight bullets. 165gr.+

I would suggest the shotgun with slugs or the 300WSM with a smaller grain bullet.
