I've been looking into lightening my backpack and one idea I came across was utilizing my trekking poles and something else, as a tripod on the mountain. There are lots of ideas out there for this setup with cameras, but has anyone done something like this for a spotting scope? If it works, and I can shave a couple more pounds off of the pack...why not?

My wife like to put my small Nikon ED 50 on her pole instead of using binos.

We are like minded.just bought a mancotto monopod .You have to see this.My spotting scope is compact nikon field scope 13/30.So far it seems ideal and is well made 200.00 and up though.

So are you tying your trekking poles to it somehow for stability? I've looked at some cheap monopods as well, but haven't found a good solution to make it stable. Taking pictures is one thing, but using a spotting scope will require a lot more stability. Can you post a pic of your setup, or send me one?

Gossamer Gear trekking poles
Slik pro 624 CF tripod
This will probably save you 2lb from your setup now
