RCMP search for Alberta men missing on Gull Lake
By SUN MEDIA

Rimbey RCMP will resume their search today for two Alberta men who haven't been seen since leaving for a fishing trip on Gull Lake, 139 km south of Edmonton, earlier this week.

An RCMP spokesman said the first day of searching has turned up no clues as to where the men -- who work together in Kananaskis -- may be.

"They went onto Gull Lake sometime on Monday for fishing. They were reported missing (in Kananaskis) this morning and their vehicle was reported as an abandoned vehicle today at noon," Sgt. Patrick Webb said last night.

He said the police put the two pieces of information together and looked for the two men from 6 until about 9 p.m. yesterday, but came up empty-handed. Webb said the men are 45 and 24 years old and were planning to be gone just for Monday.

Police do not know whether the two were dressed for the weather, how much outdoors experience they have or even if they had life jackets on board the canoe.

"What was left around the (men's) truck indicated that they had their canoe and they're gone," Webb said. "We're still trying to track down people that know them and people that have anything to do with them, so we can find out more information."

Webb said police will resume their search today around 9 a.m.

CBC reporting that 2 bodies have been found.

Thought that would be the case.

I worked on Gull Lake at the provincial park at Aspen beach. That summer there were two seperate fatalities. We found one wash on shore early one morning.

Sad story, condolances to the families.

Two bodies, overturned canoe found on Gull Lake

CBC News

Rescuers believe two bodies discovered on Gull Lake Friday are those of the men who vanished during a fishing trip in a canoe.

The two men, ages 45 and 24, had set out for a daytime fishing trip Monday on the popular lake, north of Red Deer. Their pickup truck was located at Birch Bay, which is on the lake.

They were not reported missing until Thursday, when they failed to return to work in the Kananaskis area west of Calgary.

By Thursday afternoon, Rimby RCMP had launched a search by boat and airplane. Efforts continued until nightfall and resumed Friday morning with the help of search and rescue specialists and wildlife officials.

At 10 a.m., searchers discovered the bodies of two men, along with an overturned canoe, near a point of land on the east side of the lake. The men were wearing life jackets.

"The victims have been removed from the scene and are to be examined by the Calgary office of the medical examiner," police said in a release.

The search has now been called off.

Police aren't releasing the names of the men.

Canoes, large lakes, and cold water are a recipe for disaster, especially when it gets dark early.

It's so sad that these things continue to happen. I feel horrible for their families.

Don't jump to conclusions.......I heard nothing about these two being 'inexperienced'. Maybe they weren't. Accidents happen to experienced people too.
Thoughts go out to the families and loved ones.

Had a close call in a canoe taking a green buddy out duck hunting years ago, he zigged, I zagged to counter, he quickly zagged and over we went, lucky we were close to shore in late fall were able to get a fire going, standing on the shore in our gotch, A buddy also lost his dad in a canoe accident, had years of experience too. I'll never get in one again.

You know, my heart absolutly sinks when I hear about these things. Maybe it's wrong, but one of the first things that pop into my mind is, do I know these folks from the board? Could these two people have been well know regulars around here that we all enjoy? Stupid, I guess, but........

My deepest condolances to the families. We will say a little prayer for you and the victims tonight.:(

That just isn't right. Why can't this happen to criminals on their way to do whatever it is they do instead of a couple of buddies out for a day of peaceful fishing. Condolences to the families.

and Condolences to the Families. Amazing that even though they had their Life Jackets on, they still perished. I suppose it must be the Cold Water that played a role in this tragic event combined with whatever distance they might have been from the shore. I'm of course just 'guessing' but whatever the case, I'm sure there will be many unanswered questions for the family...... What a shame.

Sanuera,

The folks on this board are generally people that love the outdoors and it's many aspects. I have had the opportunity to get to know the Cowley family somewhat a few years ago working on a hotel proposal out at the Rafter 6 ranch. From that time, I know they and their employees are a close-knit group. I'm sure your uncle was one of the people that was quite close with everyone at the ranch.

We're sorry for you and your family's loss.

We are all saddened by events like this, it is tragic that they left us... But they did it fishing.

Canoes are great, but like anything else, they have their designated conditions. As we are all aware, a glass day on the water can turn ugly quick, even for the most experienced.
We do not know exactly what happened, but we are sorry for the loss of two of our brothers.

Rest in peace gentleman. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family Sanuera.
