Where will the next WR Bighorn come from, and when?

What will it score?

The new world record will not be coming from the cadomin area at least not for a very long time. I was utterly disgusted with the number and size of the rams at the mine this year. Was a shame that there are not many big ones left. I think I only saw 2 that I would say would make book even and not over 190"

That's typical for Cadomin.

But with d-3's measuring over 15", this is going to be impressive.

Ya frans' ram had some pretty big bases for cadomin, or anywhere really, but most of the rams we saw did have fairly small bases. Hopefully they bring it to the show next year I'd love to see it.

Nope. Montana can't break the 204" mark. The record will stay in Alberta, where it belongs for a very long time. :)

Ronji
04-17-2014, 10:12 AM
I agree, the record will not be leaving Alberta in our lifetime. Until sheep goes on a full draw, it will be tough to break 200. I hunted a lot of years before I even saw and shot a 190. Far to many people combing the hills for them to get that big.

Still waiting for ESRD to officially release the pictures. The Wild Sheep Foundation posted this on their Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/wildsheepfoundationalberta

"Here are some details on the ram found at Cadomin:

Ram was found in the spring of 2014, likely died in the spring of 2013, was exposed to the elements for potentially up to 10 months

Officially scored at 209 3/8" gross, 209 1/8" net

Both sides measure over 45"

First three measurements are over 15", third quarter 10 7/8

SRD is working toward a quick B&C panel score

Check back here as pictures will be posted as soon as they are available!""

From what I have heard, this ram "disappeared" over a year ago and there was some concern as to the circumstances. F&W have been on the hunt ever since. I know a couple of Cadomin tag holders last year that had their fingers crossed that this ram would reappear.

Detective work lead to a search this spring resulting in the ram finally being found, a suspected Grizzly kill. The ram was ten years old and was suspected to score 211 on the hoof.

I wonder if that other ram will end up surpassing this one? :confused0024:

question, as I am not familiar with F&W and B&C policies, since this was a pick up will the guy that found it get to keep it? Second question will it be accepted in the book as the all time new world record (assuming its large enough) or will it just be a "big pick up" and the last hunter hold the title for the world record. i.e. does it need to be killed by a hunter to be the world record?

It will be entered as #1 in the B&C all time books but instead of the hunters name it will say "picked up" and by who if they wish.

F&W will be the owner, not the guy that found it. If the score holds it'll be the new #1. The #1 non-typical white tail is a pick up also.

The WR NT White tailed deer is a pick up.

F&W found the ram. Discussions are happening to decide what to do with it.

The ram would look great in a new display trailer. ;)

if an average Joe found it they would not be able to get a permit for it? Or is it because of the size? Would be awesome to have this one travel the sheep shows and other venues for a year or two! Hopefully it ends up somewhere a lot of the public can come see it.

If they need a place to store it in the mean time I have a spot on my wall:)

If the average guy found it, on land where you could be you could get a permit and keep it. There was a big ram that was road killed around K-Country a few years ago, F&W gave the guy a permit to keep it. That one is #4 or #5 in the record book I believe.

Lol. Want to bet on price being lower? When is the last time you were there? Way lower numbers of big rams. I would buy the Montana tag over here any day if you had to hunt cadomin. Montana you actually get to hunt the rams. Here you get to stare at a ton of sheep but it is in a no fly zone waiting on a miracle.

Have you seen how they hunt the rams in the Missouri breaks? It's a mule deer hunt driving the coulee tops! But you make of it what you want out of it. I had a blast hunting cadomin you get your daily hike in glass some rams and wait it some of the harshest conditions to hunt in. The breaks I'm sure can be the same hike a bit if you want but they're essentially the same.

Not at all on a couple of accounts. Genetic codes for larger horns does not necessarily mean Better or Best, just bigger.

Check the history of these rams. If it was all about genetics, why were they smaller on average than Southern Rams before the mine existed?

From Boone and Crockett

Found Bighorn Misses World's Record Mark
MISSOULA, Mont.--A long winter buried in snow apparently swelled the horns of a bighorn sheep that died of natural causes. The ram was found this spring by Alberta wildlife officials and green-scored as a potential new World's Record.

Following the Boone and Crockett Club's mandatory 60-day drying period, the ram's horns lost an astounding four inches in net score. The original scorers reconvened to find that every measurement was smaller on both horns.

Still, with a final score of 205-7/8, the ram ranks No. 5 all time. It has been entered into Boone and Crockett records on behalf of the citizens of Alberta.

The reigning World's Record, taken by a hunter in Alberta in 2000, stands at 208-3/8.

"Though it's not a World's Record, it is another tremendous specimen symbolic of continuing, successful conservation programs. For that, we congratulate Alberta wildlife officials," said Richard Hale, chairman of the Club's Big Game Records Committee.

Hale added, "Biologists speculate this latest ram died of old age in early summer 2013, so the horns were exposed to the elements through the remainder of summer, all fall and all of a wet, snowy winter. Apparently, the horns absorbed an incredible amount of moisture, because four inches of shrinkage during the 60-day drying period is very rare."

The Boone and Crockett Club, long recognized as the leading authority on big-game recordkeeping, requires air drying all trophies at habitable room temperature for 60 days immediately prior to final scoring. It's a rule made precisely for this kind of situation.

"By standardizing the scoring process as much as possible, we ensure the credibility of our records. That's very important for the biologists who use these data to compare and contrast outstanding habitat, strong recruitment into older age classes, sustainable harvest objectives and other elements of sound wildlife management. It's also important to sportsmen in that all trophies are being treated as equally as possible," said Hale

I'm really surprised it shrank that much.

Still a monster ram regardless though.

It's like it was put in a dehydrator... Huge shrinkage!

Still a world class ram from the province I'm proud to call home since birth.

Now that this big boy is dead it would be interesting to hear some stories from hunters/guides that knew about him and had tried to hunt him in the past. Any close calls or did he just never venture off the mine? How about the minister tag holders. Was this ram on your radar? Thanks.

Yeah, I'd like to hear from people that knew about this ram and/or hunted it. I'm sure it was all hush-hush before it died, but now it would be interesting to hear of some close encounters.
