Hey- Going out this weekend for my first time on the Sask River here in Edmonton

Any tips on what lures, bait, etc to use?

Any tips would be great as I have never fished this river

Thanks again guys/gals!

Bump, the guy's just looking for some NSR tips. I live down south but there's plenty of guys who know that river well, someone get this guy started.

(or this is another epic return, watch for it)

Same as SS river or most any praire river in AB.

Miinows(spottail shiners), nightcrawlers, leeches would be a good start for bait. Jigs and twister tails(plastics), bucktail jigs are a favourite of mine if you want to cast(bait can be used in place of plastics if you wish).

All kinds of hardware from spinner baits to spoons and spinners also would work.

Check the regs for where you fish and go have fun!:)

In the city of edmonton there are a limited number of back eddies. Upstream of Edmonton is nicer but still a bit early for access points.
Fishing the straight current isn't that productive(unless for rockies). Try to find a backeddie or fish the slower water on the inside bends of the river or close to creek mouths(Check the regs on river tributaries).

I use google earth to zoom into the river and it reveals alot of the rivers structure and access points. Ahowa the shallows pretty good too.

The water will be quite colored right now so worms, leeches or minnows on a bottom rig and a smidgeon of patience.
Be prepared for a few snag ups and rig loss or two. Use just enough weight to hold bottom.

If you use rubber tail jigs, hook on a minnow through the eyes for bait too.

Rule of thumb is the dirtier the water, the darker colored jigs. Otherwise, yellow is a great color. In may and june, twin rubbertails or frog shaped rubbertails in green.

Spoons and spinners of all sizes in the back eddies. Be careful of snags. Take off the treble hook and put on a single hook for less snags.

Good luck and enjoy the river. It's been one of my favorite rivers to fish for almost a half century. You never know what you will catch. I predict the next provincial record walleye and pike will come from the NS river.
