Went out shed hunting for the day with my good friend Bearen09 and tripped over the jackpot, not much to the story, just looked in the right place at the right time. Non Typ Net 170 4/8"
Going to get Brian at Artistic Taxidermy to stain the antlers for me.

Not to sure...someone could have made a bad shot on him and lost him....I don't think he died of old age, probably only 6 years old looking at the teeth. Far away from any roads.

nice find for sure . On a found dead set like that , do you have to get the permit first before you take them home ?

I don't think he is stirring anything IMHO....just asking an honest question.

To answer....I think you can retain them as long as you take them to F&W ASAP to get a permit, but always best to call F&W and ask.

Nice find, thanks for sharing. :)

I too, think it was an honest question and not "stirring things up".

I love the second picture. Great find for you but I'm sad there is one less deer for you to hunt.

It looks like the skull must be a year or two dead. In my opinion... If the deer died naturally the fine bones in the nasal cavity would be intact. Because the fine bones are gone would make me think the deer was killed and scavenged by predators.

If it was a skull from this past winter the area you found the skull might reveal have revealed what killed the deer.

If the deer died a death from other causes like old age, disease or a bullet wound and not scavenged after death.. the spine would likely still be connected to the skull too, even after a year or two.

Just a question diamond , no need to get in a flap ..:snapoutofit: I know a permit isn't required to pick up sheds , but an intact skull plate with antlers requires one , just wondered if it is legal to take home and then get permit or if it has to lay there until permit is obtained .

This is a completely legitimate question! I posted last year about the fiasco I got into by taking my son in laws, already euro mounted antlers back to the taxidermist ( where both deer were already registered) to get finished into shoulder mounts. I got pulled over Enroute by John Wayne who proceeded to threaten to confiscate the antlers ( also asked what year my truck was, as if he was going to take it to) then read me the riot act about wildlife trafficking and told me that if I was caught again without " proper documents to transport" that he would not be so lenient. It didn't dawn on me to get a bill of lading since the deer has already been to the taxidermist once.I've walked past a lot of skulls in the bush since , not like that one of course. Get the permit ASAP !

Sorry if I jumped the gun but this topic has been dealt with dozens of times and since you are a long time member of this site I assumed you would have seen one of the many times. Everytime somebody posts a picture on here somebody seems to have need to make it a debate on ethics, rules and laws. Heck Rigby did not even post a a video of him and he had to defend himself. Again sorry for jumping all over you.

Its all good guys...I 110% expected the bombardment of questioning legality. I am stupid....but not stupid enough to post pics of a illegal deer all over the internet :) all is good. Thanks for all the positive comments everyone!

Great Pick up Jameson.
Its unfortunate the hassle involved in the permit etc , but i believe in sask you can't even pick up a found dead like that.

Boonedocks, to bad the Fish cop's have to harass you about your Euro, We went through that last fall with a legitimate killed Buck my son got last day , had it confiscated and called Poachers and harrased only to have it returned to us an hour after we got home with no apologies.
The CO's could definitely handle things different and get some respect from Hunters. Sure there are some good ones out there we have been checked by in eastern Alberta especially , but central Alberta.....biting my tongue...

Great find! Deer looks like he has the same genetics as the Zaft buck with the high tines he's sporting. That is what the rack reminds me of... Maybe he was hit by a vehicle during the rut.

I don't know why some people are getting all twisted up and saying they won't post pics anymore, I am pretty sure this was a legit question. He even said it was a nice find, for those who think he was wrong for asking I would say you need some thicker skin, that's a sweet deer to bad he is dead.

Nice Buck!! Found 2 Deadheads this year already. 1 died in fall and the other a few years ago.

I dont even question the integrity of another fellow Hunter on this forum. EVERYONE Should know the Law.
I always go get a permit as soon as I find something i want . And im not a prosecuter judge or lawyer. So i assume if your posting a picture on this forum, then Youve followed the law.

Exactly, thanks Preux86. In case there is any uncertainty here with found dead deer...Anything with a skull cap needs a found dead permit, it needs to be reported within 24 hours of finding or the soonest possible time....example....you found a skull today, you would be 100% legit to take it home and get a found dead permit on Tuesday, being the long weekend and offices closed.
I still find it unbelievable though, the amount of negative feedback a guy gets for posting pics of a cool deer online, im not talking about here....but everywhere, it seems its tough for some guys to just say, awesome nice deer. Maybe its just me...the Alberta sportsmen mentality has sure changed from what it once was.
