My guess would be 166 or 164. :fighting0030:
All jokes aside the Heart Lake area north of Lac La Biche has some big bears and good numbers aswell.

Ive also heard that around WMU 530 there are some good ones. Pat Garrett has taken some monsters in the Clearwater river area

I have hunted most of the province for more than 50 years. Some of the best areas for large black bears are north of Peace River. Some good areas include Chinchaga, Ft Vermillion, Cadotte lake.

Bergmann's Rule in Biology says that the colder the climate the larger the body size of an animal will have to be for the animal to survive. Less surface area to volume for the animal. With that being said I would say the further north you get, the larger the bears should be.

hard to say - I have seen big bears killed at the high level area, lac la biche area and the st paul area. Age and feed is critical but I think in the last few years the numbers have gone down- the late spring must of froze some in their dens

Biggest body's or biggest heads???? North will get you big fat bears. But the farther south you go the bigger the average head will be "to a extent" the longer seasons allow them to chose higher protien diets which means more bone mass. Where as north they just want fats and calories....

Seems like it might make sense to me.... Hahaha.

Big bears all over from cold lake to grande prairie and everywhere north....

The biggest black bears are where you find them. Our province has the potential to produce big black bears anywhere. My guess would be that the national parks produce the biggest bears.

FYI:

Discovery Wilderness Park in Innisfail has some pretty big bears. In fact, all the grizzlys used in the movies are kept there. Some are as big as 1400 lbs.

I don't really like the zoo captivity concept but just to see the size of the bears up close is interesting. Sure wouldn't want to see a 1400 lb. bear in the wilds, especially up close and personal. Worth going and seeing. Maybe even get a picture taken with one of the 1300lb. bears licking you face. :)

If I was going for Black Bear I'd be looking in WMU 350, 351, or 511. Seen some pretty big bears over the years up there.

There is no magic spot for big bears. They are in every zone that has bears. You just have to find them. I have seen them in every place I have hunted them. All corners of the province minus the prairies even though I have seen one out in the south east.:)

Cold Lake Air Weapons Range is supposed to have the largest population of black bears, but makes sense since you can't hunt there.

And then cross out the zones that have grizzlies in them. Their slamming the black bear population into the ground in the high density g-bear zones.

I have a friend that owns land south of Boyle. He watched a grizzly walk across his barley field two years ago while he was swathing.

I heard recently that the world record black bear was actually taken in Medocino, California. One of the reason for large black bears (but, horrible hides) is because they do not hibernate but forage and feed all year.

Biggest black bear I have ever seen was in robson park just over line in BC. The second biggest bear ive seen was on the trunk road west of Rocky. I was out bird hunting looked up this steep hill and there he was we saw each other at about the same time and we both stopped he whirled around and ran up that hill like he was running down it. I couldnt belive it that hill was so steep and he went up and out of site in a flash I was impressed. He was a trophy Bear for sure.
